When someone tells me they own property, the first thing I ask is "how many acres". I told some friends I was buying some land, and that was the first question I was asked.
Too me its like "I own a sports car". I am curious what kind, so don't tell me if I can't ask.
    Yep very true.

Just like posting on here "BIG BUCK DOWN!" you can bet your fixing to be asked how big, what county, and on and on.

I also was taught early on it was not something you asked whether you thought the place was twenty acres or twenty sections. I find people ask in small talk these days--many of whom have no idea what an acre is (at least in my wife's circle of friends). Doesn't bother me but I still don't ask others in passing unless the information is relevant.

My Grandfather did in fact start it. Ok... for some of you guys. If you worked very hard and earned 100 acres I can absolutely see how you would tell everyone what you have. But after 50 years and Third Generation I'll keep it my little secrete.

I guess I dont get the " sizing him up" comments. why would one be "sizing him up"? Not like they could buy him out if he did not want to sell. They cant rob his land like they could his 80" TV. If it means they just want to know if their spread is bigger and have more cattle who cares? If its about measuring peters then just pull em out and be done with it.

My ex-father-in-law had very large cattle operation so large that's what everyone thought he made all his money from. Truth be told he made is fortune in real estate not cattle. Those 2 ranches were just 2 purchase of many others that he was making money on. The all the others were commercial real estate buildings. So if his land and cattle is how they sized up his wallet or bank account they were waaaaaaaaay of the mark.

its only money, its only land, its only __________.

I have 0.24 acres and no cattle. I dream of owning 100 acres or more but that takes some serious cash to acquire that kind of land in my area...kinda depressing when i see land prices here in TX and back where i grew up i can buy good hunting/farming land with awesome views for 1200 an acre. round here it seems that will cost +20k per acre.

                You must live around me

Majority of land owners these days don't rely on the land or cattle as a primary income.. So it really isn't considered offensive anymore.

Doesn't mean the landowner needs to answer this question..

Then following it up with the was it high fence or low fence question? I always ask this but continue to congratulate the hunter in the process of asking. I don't really care but I do like to know, but I'm wondering if I'm potentially being rude?
If you don't really care, then why ask such a specific question? I like to hear hunting stories, so I usually just ask them about the hunt and any hunter I know will gladly replay it for you. I do want to know what they used to kill them, but rather than saying "gun or bow?" I'll ask, so what did you take them down with? Hard to take offense or read anything into that question because it could be I want to know caliber, etc.... it is so generic.

Anyways.... back to the original question:

If it is a landowner, I don't ask how many acres. The only time I ask acreage is when I am talking hunting. I might ask a guy who has some hunting property that he owns (a landowner) how much acres he has... but that is understood to be a conversation about how much deer habitat he has and how confined he is. Not about his worth.

In the same note, I don't ask people how much their house costs or the square footage when I visit.

You need to tell them the dead line for earning hunting vouchers ended Aug 31st but will start up again Feb 1st. Every day you work on the ranch earns you a voucher for a day to hunt the ranch. That should whittle down the friends list and give you an army of laborers to get chores / projects done.

This, if they wanted a pretty good approximation of what they should be worth, they wouldn't have to ask the person.
I'm was raised pretty old school, but never heard this. In my experience in North Texas, you don't have to ask, it gets offered up.
                            It's a "measuring contest". Maybe it's a regional thing.
