That's a pretty quick way to get on my Dad's bad side.
I thought it was a southern hang up, because I haven't seen it in Texas at all.
Seems its the opposite here. Folks boast about what they got.
    In Alabama, don't ask.

I always thought of it as conversation as there is a big difference between 5 and 25 and 25 and 100 and 100 to 500. It's always been interesting to me to know what's done on the land. Seems to me more of asking what you do for a living, not necessarily how much you make.

Have always asked out of curiosity, and the price of an acre is different everywhere. Seems like you could use it for a million different reasons as well. Actual work or investment or Family.

Yeah I had to put the kibosh on a few people my dad wanted to invite to hunt on our place. Once I got him to see the bigger, long-term picture he realized I was right though.

I wouldn't necessarily mind some help trimming our doe numbers but it's of one those "give an inch" kind of things.

Not a question you ask a farmer. It's like asking how much they're worth. That's how I was always raised anyway. Some may not take offense though. I usually just respond in a vague way not to be rude back when I'm asked.

In my opinion and yes it is just mine.....

If you don't want someone to ask how many acres you have, then don't tell them you own land.
When someone tells me they own property, the first thing I ask is "how many acres". I told some friends I was buying some land, and that was the first question I was asked.
Too me its like "I own a sports car". I am curious what kind, so don't tell me if I can't ask.

Let's say you ask somebody what they do for a living and they tell you they own a small chain of auto parts stores. Would your next question be "What is your company worth and how much revenue do you generate?" Not likely, but that is how some who make their living farming/ ranching take the acres/cattle question.

I have never had anyone ask what I do for a living and follow it up with a question about my salary.

Maybe if it was another Farmer from next door or same area asking, I could see the sizing up thing.

Sounds like your Grandparents were good people and you are a fortunate young man. So its like asking how many acres does my Family have right? I can see why it would be a sensitive subject for you giving that it is sounds like it is Family land and not really yours per say.

Sounds pretty dumb to me. I doubt someone asks that question because they want to know how much you're worth. I've asked it a lot of times just out of curiosity and never had someone get mad. That includes ranchers, farmers, and business owners. Lol I think you're over thinking it

I was just thinking about my actions on a similar subject. I don't want to hijack the thread but is it rude asking someone if their kill was a bow or gun kill? Then following it up with the was it high fence or low fence question? I always ask this but continue to congratulate the hunter in the process of asking. I don't really care but I do like to know, but I'm wondering if I'm potentially being rude?
