"How many acers do I have?"

I was just in a converstaion with a guy and he ask me how many acres I have. I guess I'm a little old school. In my mind asking someone how many acres they have, or how many cows do you have, is like asking how much money is in your bank account. I think it's rude. What do ya'll say? How do you answer that without being rude? Who agrees?

    I've got 88 acres, 18 mama cows

Depends on who I am talking to. I'm a banker, so I get to ask that question quite often... I have no problem telling folks what I have, because it doesn't even break double digits, so nobody will be knocking on my door trying to buy me out

I don't own any land (yet) or cattle, but wouldn't take offense to someone asking. If being a rancher was my profession maybe I'd think differently.

Why is it offensive to ask the number of head of cattle or amount of land?

Thank you. We do own our ranch and have for almost 50 years and have a cow calf opperation. It's no King Ranch but I feel like they try to size you up IMHO.

I ask people that all of the time out of curiosity. I didn't know that I was offending them

                    Money, yes thats rude.

Land and cattle, not so much in my opinion.

But hey man, its sure your right to politely decline to answer!

I also was taught growing up that asking a rancher how big his place was or how many head of cattle he owned was rude and nosey. That has stuck with me. Now, if somebody is just talking about their weekend place - not where they are making their living - it's different. (in my way of thinking anyway)

I ask that question all the time and only one time did someone get offended and they said it was the equivalent of asking them "how big his wife's tata's were"...

I was blindsided by that to say the least and once he finally answered I followed up with the tata's question out of curiosity

I can understand it being rude to you then. Thanks for clarifying.

It's not anything I thought anyone would find offensive. I've never really given it a thought. I only have 5 acres but my place is surrounded by much larger places. I have asked a couple of my neighbors how large their places are just out of curiosity. I certainly never meant to offend and they did not seem offended.
