I don't think people are being nosy or the question is ill-intentioned - just curiosity or making conversation. However just like with any other topic it is a good idea to consider how the other person is going to take the question, no matter your motivation for asking. Just good manners IMO.

I think it's rude to ask how many acres you have.
Good answer. I'll have to remember that.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong or right. I just wanted to let you guys know how I felt and see what your answer would be. In the right place talking about a deer lease sure. Standing at the sale barn watching cattle go thru, prolly not the best place (just example).

So how many acres do you have?

          Where's this acreage located?

What's the name of said Ranch?

          What's the gate combination?

Where's the best hunting on said Ranch?

Depends who is asking how honest or vague an answer they get.
Really no ones business, although don't get offended by question.

My dad has a machine shop and if he mentions it and someone asks "how many guys you have?", he will tell them and not think a thing about it. He's proud to have it. It's not like the guy goes home and starts calculating net worth. But different thing bother different people and your point is understandable as well.

I would completely agree with that. That would be when they know about the costs and actual money involved.

I've taught my kids that it is a social taboo to ask. If someone wants to tell you then they can do it, But I never ask and don't want my kids to ask. My son made the mistake a couple times when we were riding around a buddy's place in NM. When we got home I set him straight and told him why it is how it is.

Thats what my grandparents and most of the ol cowboys I grew up admiring taught. Its none of your business and rude to ask. My grandfather would always answer "Far as the eye can see" although his place was not that big

I have seen people hesitant to answer this question, but most of the time I feel like they are ashamed they have so much land/cattle/money, and they know I have so little..LOL
I have never had enough of anything for some one to ask.LOL

I would never ask how much, but I will ask Sq footage, I see no harm in that.

It doesn't bother me at all when people ask how big my ranches are. But my ranches are hunting/recreation weekend getaway ranches and are not where I make a living.
I could maybe see it being kind of rude to ask a rancher whose livelihood is his land and cattle.
