I don't think people are being nosy or the question is ill-intentioned - just curiosity or making conversation. However just like with any other topic it is a good idea to consider how the other person is going to take the question, no matter your motivation for asking. Just good manners IMO.

My dad has a machine shop and if he mentions it and someone asks "how many guys you have?", he will tell them and not think a thing about it. He's proud to have it. It's not like the guy goes home and starts calculating net worth. But different thing bother different people and your point is understandable as well.

I've taught my kids that it is a social taboo to ask. If someone wants to tell you then they can do it, But I never ask and don't want my kids to ask. My son made the mistake a couple times when we were riding around a buddy's place in NM. When we got home I set him straight and told him why it is how it is.
