Exactly!!!!... 5 friends standing around asking how big the new lease is, is different.

Doesn't bother me. I'm very proud to say that I own 118.56 acres of land.

It's not like a closely guarded secret. A name, license plate of your car, and quick trip to the county tax website and you'll find out a whole lot more about someone than just their acreage. Probably just making conversation.

I've asked 3 different landowners about the acreage when I was discussing deer leases. All 3 lied. I dont ask anymore.

i can see how one could become defensive to that question, if it is their lively hood - like I assume it is in your case. If someone asked me how much money i made at my job i wouldn't get offended, but depending on who they are i may or may not tell them.

its only money, its only land, its only __________.

I have 0.24 acres and no cattle. I dream of owning 100 acres or more but that takes some serious cash to acquire that kind of land in my area...kinda depressing when i see land prices here in TX and back where i grew up i can buy good hunting/farming land with awesome views for 1200 an acre. round here it seems that will cost +20k per acre.

I was always taught that it was rude so I don't ask unless I know the person somewhat well.

are you afraid that someone will try to steal your cattle? or try to do a hostile takeover of the deed? I still dont get it. If you had a secret formula to your success, i could understand hiding teh trade secret, but youre raising cattle, and the amount of land you own is public record from taxes.

I was blindsided by that to say the least and once he finally answered I followed up with the tata's question out of curiosity

Not afraid. It's not my full time occupation either. It was the first time I had ever meet the guy and took a little offence. I don't think it's anyone’s business. Again not trying to be rude but if you really want to know don't ask me and do your homework at the county clerk’s office if you must know.

If you are at a charity ball in downtown Forth Worth and being asked those questions then, YES you are probably being sized up

Those conversations are pretty much common place in rural Texas. I have asked them hundreds of times and never had anybody act as if they were offended that I asked. I know I personally would not be offended if someone asked me.
