Well today was the opposite of yesterday.

1 duck between 4 of us. Lots of shots around us though and at least it was a cool morning.

You could’ve given me a lot of guess’s on how we were going to do today with cold weather up north, a freeze mid week and 2 weeks of no hunting…. And us shooting 1 ringneck and seeing less than 20-30 birds would e been at the bottom of the list….

            that sucked

This duck hunting in the woods is a different ball game and I have quickly fallen in love with it. It's fast and furious. The ducks don't hardly work, no decoys involved, no calling involved, no waders, few mosquitoes, walk in on good hard ground, they fly through the trees instead of up and out, the flight is normally over by 7:15, and i get so dang excited I normally rush my first shot and don't cut a feather. I can't think of too many things I'd rather do. We're hunting dynamite holes about the size of a large living room in the middle of the woods. A few hunts i didn't take any pictures, but here's a few that I did.

Where is that? What is a dynamite hole?

Very very slow for us south of Houston. No birds to speak. One guy that i know reported scouting yesterday and saw maybe 20 ducks on 560 ac of water scattered across prime rice prairie.

Dynamite holes are just little pockets of water(like less than a quarter acre) in the middle of the woods. The wood ducks love em, especially if they have acorns dropping into them.

We are normally covered in ducks at our ranch in central Texas.

This year we haven’t had many at all. Had some building up a week before thanksgiving, but has been extremely slow since.

                          Near Beaumont.

It is exactly what it sounds like. The reason for them is beyond me. Ive only owned this property for about 3 years, but historical satellite photos show that they were made in the late 80's early 90's. There was also a well there about the same time the dynamite holes showed up, so most likely they were used for it somehow. The strange thing is, there is 9 of them in very close proximity to each other. Most only separated by a levee wide enough to drive a buggy across. Pic for size reference. Camera is on a tree on dry ground, you see pretty much the whole "pond". Notice the date and time. They are enjoying it as i type.

Thanks for the reply. Pretty much what i thought but bigger. My buddy had a place over by his moms that they dugout a pond smaller than yours in a little patch of woods where 3 fields came together. It held Woodies most years.

Was able to sneak out this morning and scratch out a limit. It was by no means fast a furious but just enough action that my boy never got board. He’s wearing his Red Ryder BB Gun out and my decoys are taking the tail end of it but i wouldn’t trade it for the world when i see that boys face when he hears the sound of a BB actually hitting one.
