Link to the page...
It's pretty clear above the words "One Entry Found" that there is no hyphen in the word "recurve". The word next to the "Main Entry" as you posted it with a hyphen is actually the phonetic spelling of the word with a dot to show the separation of syllables, it's not a hyphenated word.
Here's longbow for you too...
Longbow...
longbow - One entry found.
Main Entry: long·bow
Pronunciation: \ˈlȯŋ-ˌbō\
Function: noun
Date: 14th century
recurve - One entry found.
Main Entry: re·curve
Pronunciation: \ˈrē-ˌkərv\
Function: noun
Date: 1956
I just C&P it above...like I assume that you did...did you actually have to change it from a 'dot' to a 'hyphen' to try to prove you were right?
Not only trying to change the definition of archery but let's change the way it's history is spelled too.
BTW, Webster's doesn't recognize "bowhunt", "bowhunting", or "bowhunter" as words yet, but a few other sources do...
Bowhunting #1.
Bowhunting #2.
Bowhunting #3.
I'll get back with you on the origin of the word if you're remotely interested...it seems like it was an outdoor's writer who led the push to make it one word. I think maybe the information is part of the Bowhunter's Ed program????
I believe you will find that Long Bow started out as Long Bow meaning not a Short Bow...The fact that someone wrote it as Longbow because it was easier doesn't make it any more correct. Contractions are not proper either, but we all use them.. although when I went to school it was not allowed.

By the way Joey... The first recorded use of the term 'longbow', as distinct from simply 'bow', occurs in a Paston Letter of the fifteenth century. Now since I haven't seen the manuscript I can't speak on whether he hyphenated, used two words or a single word ... but I've seen it written all three ways all my life.. you could be right... but so could I...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_longbowLast edited by Mike Javi Cooper; 03-29-2009, 01:13 PM.

Originally posted by HSULongbow View PostWell, gee, I always thought we got into archery as a way to handicap ourselves to get more enjoyment and a challenge out of hunting. If you are going to use a crossbow because of a physical handicap, then cool (I know a guy who used to use a bow and now uses a crossbow because of a shoulder injury). If not, just wait till gun season and use your gun. Most crossbow users probably do that anyway.
Also, we must keep in mind that the crossbow was a favorite weapon of the French in the middel ages, so there.
Originally posted by deerplanter View PostIt dosn't really matter to me because of the way we set up our own lease rules. The state can set thier guide lines but that doesn't mean we have to follow them as long as we are legal. We do allow rifle hunting but we don't encourge it, most of us only bow hunt.
Originally posted by bowhuntntxn View PostMy only question is this: Where is this large group of people waiting for Xbows to be legal in Oct. at?? How does that argument hold any water at all?? There will be a small increase, in archery endorsements, until the folks realize they just paid a large sum of money to hunt, and still have to add $7. And believe me, there will be those who ***** and complain about it enough, that eventually that will go away too. Then it doesnt matter how many do it, there will be NO increase in money put into "bowhunting".
There will be just as many lost animals, or wounded animals as normal, so I dont give that much credibility. And ANY individual that wants to become profefficient will do so, so that argument is no good either. There is a thread about how often people shoot, and admittedly, folks dont shoot near enough.
It is a disgrace IMO to totally discount what the folks who rallied, lobbied, and swayed the TPWD to add the special archery only season. IMO if it changes, or the definition of "archery equipment" is changed, those people have been totally forgotten and since we are so steeped in "heritage", where did it go for them? And, I personally will not choose to use a xbow, but I will NEVER bash, or disrespect any one who does.

I've already counted down from ten three times, only to stop....now sitting at one.
The thing is this same subject has been brought forward in threads multiple times and same knuckleheads pop up to banter back an forth. No one is more "educated" or "right" (than me anyway and I quit posting on these types of topics long ago)!
