I have the Phillips Respironic and seems like a really good and quiet machine. Had mine for about a year now and wish I would have done it 20 years ago. I couldn't do the full face masks or nasal pillows as I am a mouth breather. I REALLY like the mask I have been using 95% of the time. It's a Medium sized Amara View. It fits under the nose and over your mouth. Didn't like having anything on top of my nose or the bridge as was very uncomfortable. Really, really like this mask and highly recommend it.

I have the full mask as well just takes time to get used to it. For the people that rip it off b/c they don't like it. I would do my best to find a way to make it work you need it for a reason and one is to save your life if you have never been woken up gasping for air believe me it's not very nice and scares the hell out of you.

I have the ResMed Air Sense 10 model machine and it's great. It sends the information to my specialist via the Internet. The mask I use is a Fisher/Paykel Simplus full face make/model. They come in s/m/l so you really need a medical equipment provider to fit you. While I don't like any of them, this machine and mask has been the best of the two I've had.

How do you guys clean yalls hoses? How often? I think I may be to layed back on the hose cleaning. I wipe my mask and rinse my water tank regularly.

Weekly with warm water and a touch of soap. Hang in bathroom to dry.

YOu might check with some of your local DMEs and see if they have any used machines. A lot of times, you can find them for a few hundred dollars. Also, you might search Craigslist as well. Once you get one, they are easy to set. Just Google the model # and you can find the way to set them. Its not illegal to set your own machine, its yours, so if you know the settings, its not a big deal.

Mask type will depend on if you are a Nose Breather or Mouth Breather. Im a Nose so the full face doesnt work for me.

Phillips resprosonic for me also. LOVE it! I have their dream wear mask and it's extremely comfortable, but it is too easy to take off in the middle of the night. if you move much, it slips and leaks causing lots of noise and aggrivation. I'll be going to nasal pillows shortly (they are comfortable for me also). Whatever machine you go with, get the humidifier!!!!!!! I have let mine run out of water twice and both times I woke up with the worst burning sensation from dry sinuses and throat that I have ever experienced!!! I'm talking so dry I had to get up and get some water just so I could swallow again!!!

If I wear it all night, I feel like I did back in high school! If I take it off after an hr or two, I feel like someone hit me with a truck the next morning!

There are new in box AirSense 10 Auto machines on Craigslist for $400. With that machine it's very simple to get it into Clinical Mode and make your settings. Literally takes 2 minutes start to finish to set it.

Ok.... First of all, I don't understand why all of the sudden (last 10-15 years) Sleep Apnea has become such a big deal. Where was it in the 80's and 90's? (not being negative) .... I'm sure I probably have it. It has been a while but I have woken up gasping for air and coughing but it's been a year or so and has happened 3 time that I know of. I also snore so the wife says. I didn't hear anything.

                        My Question.
How important is the sleep study?
I have a machine my Dad use to use. Can I just plug and play? Who knows what it is set to, but how important is that? I'm sure to low is not good but can you be too high? I was thinking of trying it out for a night or two before going thru the expense of doing sleep study's and all of that.

                        Thanks

Sleep Apnea has really always been a big deal just most people thought you just snored...no big deal. I would just about bet that any guy over 40 years old who is overweight has some form of sleep apnea. Same goes for a lot of women as well. I wore one for over 20 years and could not survive without it. When I went hunting, I brought my machine. Plugged into the wall and used generators and inverters hooked to truck batteries. I could not get restful sleep without it. I had battery packs for short trips. I tried every sort of mask imaginable. Always came back to the "fighter pilot" style as that style worked best for me. Couple being a fat boy with sleep apnea and high blood pressure, I was a sure candidate for diabetes. Lost 65 pounds a couple of years ago. No more sleep apnea. No more CPAP. No more high blood pressure. No longer worry about getting diabetes.

I have several friends with CPAPS. One was given to a good friend and he just uses it and has never seen a doctor about it. I would not suggest that route. I think the air flow needs to be correct for the individual involved and the titration needs to be specific for the individual. I know this for sure. If you come in from work and sit in the easy chair and fall asleep very easily and get sleepy when you are relaxed or get up from sleeping in the mornings and still feel tired, you may be a candidate for a sleep study. Once I got used to mine, I loved it. However, I now love not having to wear one a whole lot better.

It can be serious, even deadly. Guy that used to work for me, his dad actually died... Had a couple of episodes of waking up like you describe, then one night, he didn't wake up... was in a coma for days, then the family finally had to unplug him... If you've had that type of event with your sleep, I'd go get it checked out!

If you find yourself tired in the afternoon and having difficulty staying awake, you might be a .......candidate.

If you have the sleep study done, you can confirm that you have sleep apnea, which is more dangerous than naps or snoring. You are not breathing...a lot...when you are supposed to be.

Cleaning the equipment: I was told to wash the mask daily with hand soap to safely remove skin oils. I also do this to the tube and water reservoir about weekly. White vinegar is also a great cleaner, but be sure and rinse it. Always use distilled water in the reservoir.

I also recommend having a spare cushion and tubing on hand...especially when traveling away from your equipment source. I pick these up on eBay (new in package).

This! there have been people die in their sleep from sleep apnea!

                                Just one example:

Among those who have passed away in recent years are stars from Deadliest Catch, The Real World, Survivor, The Real Housewives, Buckwild, and The Bachelorette

I think the reason it is becoming so prevalent as more to do with Dr's figuring out how dangerous it can be coupled with more people hearing and asking about it. Add in the fact that our society is becoming more and more obese (myself included), and you have a recipie for a large increase in sleep apnea!
