Question for the L.E.Os about tickets.

We use all electronic ticket writers and traffic accident reports. Many of the fields/blanks that we have to fill in will auto populate if you put in a vehicle license number or drivers license number. That also applies to the VIN and if one of those 17 numbers was wrong then it would also wrongly show the plate numbers.

I had a man complain on one of my officers a couple of weeks ago. His insurance did not want to pay because the vehicle damaged was not the one listed on the accident report. I had to go back to the dispatcher logs and look at the original plate that he called in. It turned out that when the officer put the plate into the electronics, he made an error on one digit. The computer then went on to fill out the make, model, year and color of the vehicle. Unfortunately the license plate that the officer wrongly entered happened to come back to the same brand of pickup truck.

I had the officer amend his accident report and the man was able to get satisfaction from the insurance company. That is how sometimes almost every field can be wrong. It is not because the officer looked at the vehicle and made a mistake on the color and the make and the model and the year but because he improperly entered one number or letter and then did not go back and check.

I do not know if this applies to the OP but therein sometimes lies the problem with computers. Crap in and crap out. Having gone to computerized citations and accident reports it is important that the officer look back and check the but sometimes they simply did not do it. A single number or letter that is incorrectly entered can change the whole document.
