Had to put down a buck last season that was shot pretty much in the same area and was slowly getting run down.

I'd guess he was rolling down and away as the arrow hit him. The exit is probably up higher. May have even clipped his back bone then glanced up. Arrow hanging out as he ran off may be because the bh hit backbone to slow it down. Believe it or not, a deer can move a lot in a fraction of a second.

I'm not sure of the scientific name but I call it a void.

Yep, hit him too high. Just got meat. I'm guessing he was already skinny before this shot. He will probably be fine...or at least until you get another shot at him.

well it is kerville so the deer are pretty skinny to start with.... I hope my buddy can arrow him tomorrow or I get another shot at him on the rifle opening

Thanks for all the comments... its really crazy how tuff these animals are!

To me it looks like we are giving too much credit to the size of the blackstrap. Even on big bucks they are only about 3inches or so thick in height....some of those pics we are crediting the back strap with being approximately 25% of the deers height......

I think the word way is a bit strong. That shot is pretty darn close.

Can you please show me where that would be in this pic?

There is actually a scientific explanation regarding your deer. Most whitetail are of the Odocoileus virginianus species.

He is actually from the Optimus Catus species. So he is tough as all get out and has 8 more lives. Happy shooting.
