Had to put down a buck last season that was shot pretty much in the same area and was slowly getting run down.

I'd guess he was rolling down and away as the arrow hit him. The exit is probably up higher. May have even clipped his back bone then glanced up. Arrow hanging out as he ran off may be because the bh hit backbone to slow it down. Believe it or not, a deer can move a lot in a fraction of a second.

There is actually a scientific explanation regarding your deer. Most whitetail are of the Odocoileus virginianus species.
He is actually from the Optimus Catus species. So he is tough as all get out and has 8 more lives. Happy shooting.
