Don't matter what you shoot you have to put it in the rite spot. Nothing wrong with a 270 I have killed many deer with it and a big Mulie. Sometimes we get excited and make a not so good shot we are human.

You have to know how to shoot them.... And i am not talking abou aiming.

Shoot a deer behind the shoulder at close range with a rifle like that and youre asking for trouble. And the OP got it LOL.

Shoot deer IN the shoulder. They dont run. High shoulder shot. Puts em down every time. "But but but but it wastes meat!! waaahhh!!!" Guess what? When you lose an entire deer, that wastes more meat than blowing up a shoulder....

I wish you luck in the track. I hope you find him.

This. I don't rifle hunt much anymore but when I do I blow straight through that front shoulder and no animal has ever moved on me

Some one mentioned it in an earlier post, find nearest watering hole if there is one. We have several tanks on our ranch and one 40 ac lake. Most of the deer we have trailed went to water.

I was pretty excited and might have pulled the shot a bit but at the time it felt solid. I just don't understand hitting a deer broadside, getting lung blood, but not a good blood trail. I also found a tuft of white hair on a tiny piece of skin. I didn't shoot low at all, how did I get white hair?

                This 100%...
Check under every bush off trail too...you're be surprised how they'll get up under that brush & die after being wounded...

I shot a doe this morning with a 7mm08 at 60 yards... broadside... white hair all under the feeder... aa few Chunks of lungs on the ground... NO BLOOD!! shot her with a hornady 140 gr sst... I followed the tore up ground and 75 yards away there she laid.... she didn't bleed till I picker her up to load her.... this is why I normally use a 223 and neck shoot em... they either fall drt or you miss!! Still haven't missed one with the little Weatherby I got!

That's funny! I grew up hunting with a 270 and have never had a problem. I have seen several deer lost with a 25-06. I even had some old guys talk me out of the 25-06 when I was a kid. I don't gun hunt much but to me it's just like any other weapon. You need good bullets and good shot placement. My worst blood trails with a rifle have been my 300 wsm. I shoot tsx and they just blow through. Good luck on the track. At that range I woujd shot straight through the shoulders as mentioned above and "break them down."

I've shot a bunch of deer with my .270 (40-50 in the past 20 years... we used to go on a lot of meat/doe management hunts) and have never failed to recover a single one... I've had a couple run off due to a bad shot (Yea I made a couple when i first started hunting and gut shot a couple) but haven't had one not go DRT in years... of course I haven't shot one with a rifle in 3 years though...

The only high powered bolt action rifle I own is a .270. Over a hundred deer have fallen to that rifle before I took up bow hunting. I only had to track one and she only went thirty yards. I consider that the only bad shot I ever made with that rifle. 225 yard shot that I misjudged. Drops elk like a sack of potatoes too.

You do realize .270 is one of the best calibers ever made for whitetail deer right?

White hair means a low shot. Probably just grazed her low.
