I hope this thread has been educational & for those who have never experienced bullet failure with a good hit remember it. Last sighting is usually never more than 50yds once they hit cover of safety if you hit them with a good boiler.
I love that caliber. Its ballistic twin is the .260 Remington but a good bit more expensive. I own a few rifles in 6.5 x 55 Swedish

Great buck sir! Congratulations on finding him. No telling how many million people in the deer woods are shooting the wrong caliber what with the .270's that are in the woods every year after deer and elk... I for one used to be one of them. You study the ballistics of that ol' .270 Win. and you'll see it is one of the flattest shooting non-magnum calibers out there and has excellent energy levels to take out any North American game out there... I've got a couple .270's that have been the death of a few hundred animals over the years. My personal favorite is an old 700 BDL that is pretty much straight out of the box with my trigger tweaking and barrel floating that just fits me and shoots where i point it... It's never shot a factory round and I've never body shot anything with it... up to and including bull elk... all DRT. Haven't even had it out of the vault other than to clean in since 1998, but If I needed to make the shot of a lifetime, that'd be the rifle I'd go get first.

Again, to the OP, VERY nice buck and congratulations to you sir!

I had some problems shooting behing the shoulder with ballistic tips from my .270. There would be hardly any blood. I guess the bullet would pass thru with almost no expansion. I went back to the shoulder shot and it's a done deal. You can usually watch them drop but usually messes up both shoulders.

Maybe I need to quit shooting ballistic tips ???? Nope. Ain't gonna happen.

The buck in my avatar was shot with ballistic tips...my taxi asked: "what in hell did you use to shoot his thing with"??

I told him my 280ai at about 175-200yds & he said to switch bullets...he showed me the exit from the cape on the inside and we picked out about 100 specks of lead out to 5-6" from the exit side. They shot so good, I dismissed it until I started getting no exits from bullet failure.

The new bt's are better but if you are shooting over 3000fps?? There are lots better options. FWIW

                    Lost deer

Hopefully you found your deer and the coyotes didn't get to it first like mine.
