    Lost a Buck...help

This evening, I was out to shoot a doe when a big 8 walked out. He stopped at the hand corn I put out 50 yards away. I was shooting Federal Premium Vital Shock 130 grain .270. He was perfectly broadside and I felt I made a good shot. I watched him run off expecting to see him go down. He ran out of sight about 130 yards away at full tilt. There was no blood where he stood but I found some about 5 yards away. There wasn't much but it was foamy lung blood and I found a small piece of lung tissue. The trail went about 10 yards and stopped. It was shortly before dark and it was lightly raining so whatever blood was there quickly washed away. I searched in the direction he ran but found nothing. He was angling toward the fence line (the direction he came from) but had probably another 100 yards to get there if that's in fact what he did. It's pretty open country, only oak trees, not much ground cover to hide in. I don't have a blood trail and am not sure how hard he is hit and I may have already bumped him. What do I do?

Be there looking first thing in the morning and you could give a dog a shot but it would be better to make that a first resort and not your last as the scent will fade as time goes on. Good luck and keep us posted!

Shouldn't be far from where you stopped. 50yrd shot with a .270....should be stone dead.

My dad always says. When in doubt, back out. Then come back later or in the morning.

Shooting in the rain at dark is always risky. Probably not much blood due to no exit hole with a .270

Why would a .270 not exit?
