Friendly Discussion: What shot size for Ducks

A friendly discussion this morning proved that some people are very passionate on the absolutely perfect size shot for ducks. I thought I would see what the GS has to say.

To try to take some of the variables out of this, the conversation is limited to ducks hunted in flooded timber with a high population of mallards. No geese to be considered.

What is your preferred shot size?

Hunting mallards in timber, I prefer 3s but will shoot 2s or 4s if I can't find them.

I shoot #4 everywhere. Either 3" or 3 1/2", I like to put as much steel in the air as possible!

Been using #4 but recently bought some #2, just haven't had a chance to get back out and try em. I've only been duck hunting the past two seasons though and it hasn't been very many times even then.

I prefer a higher velocity #3 like the Winchester blind sides. It will kill a snow goose and wont destroy a teal. I buy about six boxes around teal season and use them all year.

I like #4 in 3" I have had better luck than the #3 in the same load size.

IF I have them, I like to shoot Kent 3" #4's in that scenario.

Most of the time I just shoot whatever is in the bottom of my bag.

I use 3 1/2" #2 for ducks and geese. I use the Kent Fasteel Precison 1-9/16oz load. Goose hunting I use a Kicks High Flyer full choke, folds them up with ease. Even shot cranes last week with #2s.
