All in a matte finish
Have the trigger set to about 2.5-3# by a good gunsmith.
Kill lots of deer!

25-06 few years back and really like it a lot. My 13 yr old daughter can shoot it without to much of a problem. Its a savage with accu trigger and shoots pretty tight groups.

Top it with a 3-9x40 scope and you're set. Nikon or maybe a Leupold VX-II if you can find a deal.
Originally posted by Kiwifan View PostOk, well rifles are a huge field field but I'll try to get you started a little. The first and most important thing is that different rifles, calibers, etc work better for different people, so don't get too hung up on the "right" gun, caliber, etc for you.
Have you ever shot a rifle? Everyone's recoil tolerance is different and it can determine what you will enjoy vs what you will hate..or simply not do well with. Shoot before buying
I'll try to break this down by category. I'm assuming for the moment you are looking at a bolt action rifle.
Brands:
Well just like with bows everyone has there own preferences, but here are some popular, quality brands you might want to look at. There are a LOT of gun makers out there, many more than I have space for.
-Browning
-CZ
-Remington
-Ruger
-Savage
-Winchester
-the Remington 700, Ruger M77, and Winchester Model 70 are all very popular choices.
Caliber
Here in TX pretty much any centerfire rifle cartridge is legal* for deer hunting, .223 remington is about the smallest you'll see people hunt with.
243, 308 winchester, 270, and 30-06 are all very popular cartridges sold by pretty much every ammo maker and can be found in most anywhere.
280 remington works fine as well but is harder to find.
I've killed most of my deer with a 243 or 270.
243 is definitely the easiest on the shoulder.
As for scopes, they are just as huge a field as rifles, but the most popular type for most people is a 3-9x40 or similar.
I'd look at-
--Bushnell
-Redfield
-Leupold
-Nikon
-Minox
At $100-200 I'd go with a Redfield Revolution
at $400 or so a Zeiss Conquest will amaze youi have shot a 223 270 280 plenty of times and i have a 380 Taurus and a 22 and now i want to add a rifle to my little collection of guns!!
i dont mind a little kick but i want to LOVE my gun not just like it!! and yes bolt action for sure!! i was actually pretty intersted in the remington 700 and also in scopes i hear swarovski is a good brand as well just a little on the expensive side!! but i was also lookng at the Zeiss for sure!!

Remington 700 308, with the Leupold of your choice on it! You will never need another rifle. Cheap ammo, you can find ammo anywhere for it btw! And minimum recoil! My brother goes to school at A&M, next time he comes home I can send a few rifles back with him if you would like to try a few different calibers out! Just pm me if wanted! Good luck!

look into a Thompson Pro Hunter in a .243 I bought my wife this gun in a .270 What i like about it is that you can change the barrels out on the gun. If you want to change calibers later, all you have to do is change out the barrell. You can shoot rifle or shotgun. Its a pretty cool set up.
As far as scopes, just remember, dont go cheap. You pay for what you get. I like Leupolds or Nikons.

If you can find one, a Remington 700 mountain rifle in 260 Remington. I've had one for almost 15 years and have literally lost count of how many animals it has taken between me, my wife, both my daughters and my son.
Light weight rifle, low recoil, low muzzle blast.
A 270 and 280 have fairly sharp recoil, especially for a smaller shooter.
