In the original, John Wayne towered over the other actors.

While I expected Bridges to do a fine job, I did not expect him to dominate the movie like Mr. Wayne and he didn’t. If anything the young lady’s portrayal of Maddy Ross stole the movie. She was really, really good. If any acting awards come out of this one, I suspect they will go to her.

What I did expect was vastly improved cinematography and man, the Coen’s delivered. I’d go into detail, but I don’t want my opinion to be a spoiler for anyone who missed the original and still plans to see this.

In short, I don’t think it was the Coen’s best work. I’ll certainly watch it again, but I don’t see it dropping into my repeat rotation like "No Country for Old Men".

However, I thought it was well worth the price of big screen admission. As Hillary shared in another conversation, “I’d have enjoyed it even without sound”.

    I could not agree more.

        Just saw it. Great movie.

In John Wayne's True Grit, John Wayne's the star, no surprise there. In True Grit II, Mattie is the star.

Even still it's a great movie that I think could longshot an award or two come Oscar time.

think it's one of the best movies I've seen in the last five years. you can't replace John Wayne but Glen Campbell was terrible in the first True Grit and Matt Damon far outdoes him. Jeff Bridges does well - needs to be fatter but other than that thought it was really really great.

I can't wait to get the DVD and watch it a couple more times, I'm betting I'll like it more with each viewing. I think it's still to hard for me to not compare it to the original, and I honestly did try.... But having seen the original at least a hundred times, in every scene of the re-make I was anticipating every line and every scene........because I can recite them all.

Like I said, I'm a John Wayne junkie.....and True Grit is my favorite of his movies. As much as Kim Darby irritated me, I thought Glen Cambell's ineptitude was what made LaBeof what he was.

For die hard John Wayne fans it'll be dissapointing but the Coen brothers made a great movie.

Better than the original in my book...
I agree much better than the original, forgive me Duke.

This new movie is going to follow the book very closely . The first True Grit did not follow the book .
I was very upset when i saw that Jeff B. playing the part . I just think he sucks as an actor .

I don't think it could be as good as the orginal, but it's a western and how many of those do we get to see on the big screen today. Most of the moive are in 3-d or antamated. Wether it's good or not i would rather spend my money watching a western than wearing those silly glasses that you have to pay for.

OK. I saw it and liked it but there were a couple of oddball things that just didn't make sense to me.

Number one, the patch on the right eye was not very well thought out by the directors, especially with him shooting right handed. Anybody that has ever tried to shoot right handed with the right eye closed or covered knows that it is virtually impossible to hit what you are aiming at. You can't shoot with one side of your body and look with the otherside, it just won't work.

Number two. Most of the movie took place in the Cherokee Nation Country and sans on little clip there were no other native americans in the movie whatsoever. Now if you were to go looking for someone in that country it sure seems that you would run into quite a few "residents" of said country.

If it weren't for the girl my feeling is that this movie would have been a total bust. She made the movie in my opinion.

Loved it...but I made a real effort not to compare the new vs the old. Just took it for what it was. I believe the 2nd and 3rd watching will be even better.
