The Cohen bros. did an excellent job on this film. The Duke will always be irreplaceable but this is worth the time to watch.

The original was and still is one of my all-time favorites and John Wayne was a childhood hero so I was a doubter when I heard about this. Went and saw it anyway and was quite impressed. I'll give Bridges the nod for a better portrayal of a drunken U.S. marshall. Sorry, but the Duke was very Hollywood (did you know that he got into acting only after hurting his knee while playing football at USC) and we probably wouldn't accept him in this role if he (or an actor like him) came onto the scene now. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Bridges get a nomination for best actor. He played the role of drunken, bum marshall very well in my opinion. Also, as I recall, a lot of the original was filmed in mountains that simply don't exist in Oklahoma.
Of the 3 main characters, my least favorite was Matt Damon's character. Not so much because of the acting (he wasn't given much of an opportunity) but more because he made Texas Rangers look like idiots - wish they had made it a little more clear that he was from Virginia before he joined the Rangers. Perhaps I'm a little defensive on that point, though.
Edit: Just looked at IMBd, and noticed that a lot of the filming for the original was done in California and Colorado. The new version was mostly in Texas from what I can tell. Neither were filmed in Oklahoma but the Texas landscape was a lot closer to reality in my opinion. If we were honest with ourselves, I think most of us would say the new version is much better than the original if they were released at the same time or if we had never seen the original. Probably better not to compare them and just enjoy them both.Last edited by Heron; 01-08-2011, 12:05 AM.

While John Wayne did win an Oscar for True Grit, I think the Cohen Bros and Speilberg did a far better job directing in TGII. Of course the special effects were great also in TGII.
We watched the John Wayne True Grit on the AMC channel today and I've got to tell ya that we really liked TGII better.
It seems that the cowboy movies of those times always ended in the hero riding triumphantly off into the sunset as John Wayne did in True Grit 1969. Take any cowboy show back then and it always seemed, to me, to have the same happy ending. That was just fine with me when I was a kid, but today I like a tad more realism. Even Lonesome Dove 1989 and Unforgiven 1993 ( more recent times) had more realism when compared to the old westerns.

I saw it on New Years Eve with the Family. It was a little intense for my 8 yr old and it had a lot of language in it; as well as a lot of gratuitous gore and blood, so I probably would have enjoyed it more if they hadn't been with us.
The girl was great but there was quite a bit of over-acting on everyone elses part. Did not have the feeling of a Cohen Brothers movie and was not in their top 3 for me.
It was a good remake, but not a great one. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Will watch it again as a rental to see if it feels different next time around.
I also just saw TRON and Bridges did a great job in this flick as well. I was actually quite surprised with this movie. Had no expectations going in, and it was a very entertaining Sci-Fi flick.
