I have an issue with kids shot placement. I've killed big hogs w a .17WSM. And yokes w same gun at 200 yds, but my 7 yo grandaughter would have probably failed.

I don't like anything under 120 (130 really) grains for bigger game.

I know a .223 will work, but others work better, imo.

      That’s fair.

look at ammo availability & price to help make your choice.

I have shot more than my share of pigs with .17 to a 270/308. The 270 is best at DRT in my calibers, but not many in the recoil range you are looking. I have killed a several hundred with a 7.62x39 and maybe 1 out of 10 will drop. little better results with front of shoulder than behind the shoulder, and it is really a 150 yard and less gun. With 308 they usually drop within 50 yards (but ammo and is little more costly), 7.62 within a 150 yards, and 223 within 200 yards. I don't really care as i'm just keeping them away from the hay meadow as much as possible.

My son has one ar-15 lower and two ar-15 uppers. He has a scope on the 223 and a thermal on the 6.5 grendel. You pull two pins out and you can switch from one to the other on the same lower. It really is that simple.

He uses two different magazines for the ammo.

OP, I am with you on the 223. Not a big fan.

Derek, my grandsons have killed a bunch of deer with my 6.8 SPC. I have a .223/5.56 set up just like it and that's what we practice with. When we get in the stand, it's the 6.8... I shoot Hornady 120 grain SST's and they are lights out. I'd highly recommend it for you and your grands! If you want to stack 'em in the same hole, ARPerformance makes the absolute best 6.8 uppers that money can buy. You'll need the upper and magazines for the 6.8 SPC...
I shot a 3/8" 5 shot group at 100 yards with it the first time I took it to the range and that was before I got my Trijicon optics on it...

I have now 2 rifles for deer/hog size animals, that ARP 6.8 SPC II and an Armalite AR10T in .308 and both are tack drivers with very manageable recoil. Only upgrade I did to either was to put in a single stage Timney drop in 2.5 # trigger.. Hate 2-stage triggers and that's what both came with.

I have a a few 223s. I wanted a new round with a bit more power so i was thinking of a 25-45, 6.5G or the 300hamr. I decided on the 300Hamr and i am aiming for 2300fps with 125grain bullets out of an 11.3inch SBR. My barrel should be here soon so ill update when i finish it.

What’re you wanting to use it for is a good place to start. 300BO might not be your best choice if you want to use it as a varmint rifle.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but I think the best new AR cartridge you can get is a 6arc. It’s got factory ammo in the 90-110gr range and shoots flatter than 6.5grendel. If you want to be able to send a lot of rounds downrange for cheap like .223 I would suggest a 7.62x39 upper most bullets are going to be 120-125gr. Both of these two rounds will require different magazines

The new AR15 cartridges are great for their intent, which is fitting in that particular platform and giving you more pop than a 5.56. All of them give something up to do so, be it velocity, bullet weight, etc compared to a traditional rifle cartridge like a 308. If you want old school power, you want an AR10. The drawback is it's a lot heavier and recoils a bit more. You just gotta pick which is more important, big boom in a less nimble gun or enough boom to do the job in a smaller package. Can't go wrong either way.

Ok, I bought one of the "deal alert" AR-15 6.5 Grendels.

Now what ammo I want to get? I'm wanting at least 120g for deer/hogs. Don't want any fmj steel plinking junk.

This gun will be sighted in and put in the safe. Will only be used for hunting.

Looking for cheapest hunting/sp ammo available. Not entering any LR contests, just needs to be snuff can accurate at 100 yds.

Is hunting ammo offered in bulk?
Would like to have at least 200 rds for starters, in case I get into a wad of swine!

Good luck finding that for Grendel right now. The only hunting ammo I see on a regular basis is Hornady ELD-M and SST's. I haven't found a factory BTSP bullet like a Sierra Game King in a very long time. Finding good components to reload is just as difficult.
