    100 yards with a pistol

Well seems like it's not as difficult as I thought. For the record when he says all day long I think he means like he can do it whenever he wants. Not he can literally stand there all day and shoot lol. I don't think I'll bet him but I may bring out my kimber and try and shoot with him. Is a heavier or a lighter bullet better for it? I'm shooting a full size kimber warrior .45acp with the stock iron sights

Ha well a 45 is already up there in weight. I have always put 230gr through mine. I am sure heavier bullets would buck wind etc better but as to how much better a lower vs higher grain weight bullet in a 45 probably doesn't amount to much. The 45 acp BCs aren't to swift so fat heavier means in the air longer so more time for wind to affect it. I wouldn't worry about it is what I am getting at. lol

It all depends on the pistol and the kind of optics on the gun!

Also, You would have to have a rock steady rest!!!!

I had a friend that had a contender that I would shoot at targets 200 yards and before that day, I had never picked up that particular gun! I his the target every time, no problem.

A year or 2 back that mounted officer did it (100 yds) in Austin one handed while holding the reins of his horse while loading the horse. Perp was shooting up the police station I believe...

Optics and rest? Just throw it up there and squeeze one off iron sights. My brother and I grew up shooting against each other all the time. last time we were out shooting we were shooting beer cans across a pond. When we ranged it it was 80 yards.

                  Fun sport

I used mainly TC pistols and a Python Hunter. All were scoped though.
I did a lot of silhouette shooting back in the late 70s and through the 80s. I always shot in the open sights class. Lot of fun and yes 100 yards wasn't that hard with practice.

I've killed whitetail over 100 yds open sights but using a good rest.

Can't do it anymore. I do good to hold a 8" group at fifty yards with a rest now.

When you introduce scopes and specialty pistols into this discussion, you're talking apples to oranges. With my .260 Encore, I will ring steel literally " all day long " if you supply the ammo of my choice and a good shade tree with a bench under it. And I'll do it farther than 100 yards too ! To do it with a hunting gun, sans scope, is not easy unless you practice for it, and to do it with a self defense gun is even harder, but it can be done. Takes burning lots of powder !

It is now part of our training that we shoot our duty pistols at 100 yards due to several incidents in recent years where officers didn't fire on subjects shooting at them because "they were too far to hit."

On a man sized silhouette, I can assure you, that if I do my part, I can hit the silhouette all 8 shots with my Series 70 at 100 yards, no optics, no comp sights, just plain ol' irons. I can do the same with my Glock 22. It all comes down to fundamentals.

My Taurus Ragin Bull 41 mag 2x Weaver shoots 2" six shot groups from a pistol rest.
My Ruger Bisley Hunter 41 mag open sights no rest hits 4 of 6 on 8-1/2 x 11 paper.

I have neck shot 2 deer at 100yds with the Ragin bull 5 minutes apart. First doe down and then the stupid one that walked over to smell of it. Lots of hogs from 50 to 75 yards. Love the smack sound of that 270 grain Leadhead bullet when it hits a big old pig.

This made me remember the APD officer who took down a crazy dude over 100yards while holding the reins on his horse:

Holding the reins of two horses with one hand, Austin Police Sgt. Adam Johnson raised his service pistol and fired a bullseye into the target some 312 feet away.

LOL, me too! But, I don't hunt with a handgun. I use them strictly for self defense and an occasional hog around the feeder at close range. I'm sure many can but there are reasons when I was an LEO we never trained at that range? Of course, as I grow older and the eyes fade with shaking hands, I won't own any caliber (semi) that's not a double stack! I figure if I can pull the trigger fast enough round 10 + should hit something to change the perps mind?
