    Weatherby Vanguard accuracy help

Years ago I bought a weatherby vanguard .30-06 and consistently shot sub moa with it. I used it to kill many animals and always kept it clean. I bought a .308 savage which became my go-to gun and after getting used to the accutrigger, and noticing some accuracy issues with the weatherby I consistently shoot 2" groups with weatherby now.

I have a couple questions: 1) what is the barrel life on these and what is a preferred replacement? 2) The trigger is super heavy, so what is a preferred replacement?

I miss the days of feeling dead on and taking head shots without concern with this gun. I once killed three hogs, a doe, and a coyote with head shots in the same day. Now, I wouldn't feel comfortable taking a head shot with this gun. I did test the scope and make sure everything is tight.

A couple pics of its handiwork.

I installed a new timney trigger in mine and I love it. It was very easy to do.

I did a very thorough clean to no avail. I wonder how much the trigger has to do with it. It feels like garbage now in comparison to my savage.

Timney in my Vanguard. Will help a lot. Also give it a good cleaning. Shouldn't be anywhere close to a worn out barrel unless you've shot 10s of thousands of rounds.

Used it quite a bit but not that much. I'll give the Timney a try. I see them going for around $119. Sound right?

Float the barrel. It helped my weatherby rifles a lot. They have a pressure pojnt at the forend of the stock from the factory. I removed them and relieved the barrel channel some. Now they are free floating from the chamber forward and shoot much tighter groups.

Not all cleaning agents are created equal. Try some other products. Butches bore shine works well for me. If carbon builds up try Ioso paste.

For cleaning the only option I use is wipeout bore foam. Normally rifles will tend to shoot better the more they get fouled to a point. If you let it sit for 2 years I would check for pitting in the bore. As to what is barrel life on a .30cal gun you are looking into the mid thousands for most unless you are shooting stupid fast barrel burner hand loads. My last .308win barrel lasted sine 6300 documented rounds and I bought that gun used, most of that was shooting -06 velocity loads. I really doubt it's shot out. Shoot me a pm im down in katy and might could help you out

Far more likely you have some very difficult to remove fouling in the bore than actually physically shot it out.

Solid copper bullets like Barnes for example leave a significant amount of copper fouling in a bore. Standard bore cleaners don't even put a dent in that fouling. You need to use a solvent that is specifically for copper removal to really get it out. You also need to use a brand new bronze brush when using this stuff. Your finally step when using a copper solvent is to run two patches wet with brake cleaner through the bore. Wait a couple minutes and then patch it dry. The brake cleaner neutralizes the copper solvent and stops it from eating into the bore itself.

Moly coated bullets (they are black) leave fouling that practically none of the standard bore cleaners touch either. You need to run a couple patches wet with acetone through the bore. Run the brush through it 10 times and dry patch until clean. Then guess what? Do a standard bore clean with you favorite bore cleaner.

A new bronze brush makes a big difference. Lots of guys don't replace their brushes often enough. They are only a couple bucks.

Stay away from those stainless tornado brushes. You can damage your rifling with one of those things.
