I would buy a Remington 700 BDL in 30-06 and put a Lueppy 2x7 on it. Only thing in the world you can't hunt with it is African dangerous game, and that's just because they wont let you. Proper placed shot from a 30-06 will kill anything under the sun

I took the question as a hunting only rifle for large game animals, not apocalypse type scenario. I chose the kimber because it's light weight for mountain/stalking type hunting, and you can sit in a stand with it.

If we're talking hunting rifle then it's a no brainier. My Browning A-Bolt .270 hands down. Hits where I aim every time. My buddy shot an Elk at 360yrds with his. I've never shot that far but it's nice to know what that caliber is capable of.

My bison 6.8 is my favorite of all time. Honestly don't have another rifle I rather have. Only thing to make it better is quality glass.

I really got to thinking about this. I guess on a technicality you would be find on Personal/home defense because you could carry a pistol, but lets slap a modifier on here. The ATF went off the deep end. You are now allowed to own 1 firearm.

One firearm? .12 Gauge shotgun. Don't know what it would be exactly, but it would be the most versatile. Still kill my birds, and deer, just have to change how I hunt deer a little
