Well since cajun blake only gets to keep one of his rifles in this theoretical query I volunteer to take one of his absolutely beautiful rifles off of his hands so he doesn't have to throw it away.

But in all seriousness out of my current rifles it would have to be my .270 for its sheer versatility.

It's kind of funny how different people think about this. I consider the question as a tool for hunting or survival, not defense. If I only got one, I want to be able to supply food for my family or sport. I joked about zombie's but only after reading the comments about picking an AR for my only one rifle. Interesting to say the least.

Not sure if the OP asked what you would use it on, but that would be a good question considering the choices. BTW, some great guns.

Toss up between my Ruger 10-22 or AR-15. I could literally carry 1000's of rounds of .22 of needed but .223 availability is usually pretty good. Oh, if I had my choice of glass I guess any Leupold Mark4 would do.

I took the question as a hunting only rifle for large game animals, not apocalypse type scenario. I chose the kimber because it's light weight for mountain/stalking type hunting, and you can sit in a stand with it.

In the old days, a bolt action .22-250, in the modern era a .223 on an AR platform. The .22-250 is the better caliber but if the choice is only 1 rifle...

Ok, here I start another controversy with my "inexperienced opinion, lol!"
Here are a few considerations which I'm sure will be challenged:
*Uncertainty about ammunition available in the future....(check what you can find retail)
*How are your gun maintenance skills....can you break down and clean for performance?
                          *Handgun, rifle or shotgun?
*What is your reason for the right firearm?....Self Defense, Hunting, Plinking or just to get a "new one?"
*Are you the ONLY shooter? (will your lady, kids also want to shoot it?)
*Set your budget to fit the firearm. "Lot's of good deals but many USED can be bought NEW sometimes for less than posted."

So, NO real answer to your question but:
*RIFLE....30-06, 30-30, 223, 22-50 ALL bolt action unless you can work on semi-auto's. Ammunition for these caliber's are still relatively easy to find in the first two listed. Recoil, if it matters is almost not a consideration in the 223, 222, 22-250 and will take down any TEXAS game animal. Most of all, easy for kids, ladies or anyone who needs a "soft" result when shot. I know, many other calibers that I love too, but listed here strictly for ammunition availability. 30-06 is my favorite if it is only me doing the shooting and I like the value of Ruger's.

                          *Handgun....semi-auto 45 ACP for home defense....40 S&W for concealed....(or 9mm, small frame)

*Shotgun...I'm a old fart so I have gone to 20ga

So, more info than you requested...is this a test? Also, please no insults as I value your opinion and was raised to be respectful thus will not insult your opinion...plus I probably have a few years on you young folks! Ah, experience, does not count as the days go by, just ask my sons...LOL. Be safe and protect yourself....

Oh, forgot..my advanced old age to blame....Scopes? I still like Nikon because I can afford it "sometimes" and my old eyes can see the target! 3x9x40 depending on the firearm and what I am shooting at MINIMUM. There I go again, starting another controversy...LOVE IT!
