If you had to choose a long range round, what would it be? Off the shelf round not a custom hand load.

depends on the conditions. .308 is good, however .300 mag has a higher ballistic coefficient making it less susceptible to crosswinds and sun/shade spots. Now I am not sure about this as I am not a avid long range shooter, this is just what I have gathered in knowledge the few times I have been to the local "private" 1000 yard range.

It all depends on if ammo price was an issue. My two choices would be .308 and .300 Win Mag. I have pushed the .308 out to 1340 yards in sniper instructor school. 900 to 1000 yards was pretty easy for the .308. The .300 would be the better choice due to being able to push a 200 plus grain pill with a better BC but it is a lot more expensive per round. Depends on how serious you are about really shooting that far.

does make a difference
I did however shoot an accurized Winny Model 70 .308 in 1000 meter comps while in the service. For some reason, I cant stand to hunt with one though

Also how about a 270 mag or 270 weather? Is it considered good long range? Mid to larger caliber. I couldn't imagine anything bigger than a 308

They both are .30 caliber rounds, thus throw the same bullet. Usually the .300 win mag thows a bigger bullet at a much higher speed. You will feel that in your shoulder though.
What is your purpose? Gonging steel? You would probably be happy with a 6.5 grendel, certain .308, a .300 win mag, ect.
Shooting critters? A .300 win mag or a .264 win mag would be my pick.
What do you want to do?
I am making assumptions that you do not want to hand load (big mistake.... but to each his own)
If you want to shoot to that range on a budget, make sure you have a heavy barrel. Otherwise you won't get to shoot but once or twice and your barrel will heat up and you won't hit anything.
I've been doing alot of research trying to find out what I want to do for my "Long range" rifle.
I'm going to go find a cheap Remington 700 that has the same bolt face as the .300 win mag (.375 H&H children casings). Then I'm going to order a Bartlein Barrel, a HS precision PSS046 stock and a set of .300 win mag dies. I will use factory ammo to get used to the rifle, then I will start hand loading. My goal is smaller than a 1" pattern at 200 yards.
Some of this is subject to change... But as of now that ^^^^ is my plan.

I want to kill with my .308 minus the shoulder bruising.
