As a young fella starting out I shot my first 8-10 deer with a 22 caliber gun. .223.. Every one dropped in their tracks. all vital shots, no necks or heads.

I have a cousin that shoots ALL his deer with a 22-250 but he likes neck shots.

I have a co worker that also uses one and shares the gun with his wife.

I had a neighbor that had a browning in .22-250 that I kick myself in the @$$ for not buying from him. He thought it couldn't shoot till I showed him that it could shoot very well, I should of made him think that it shot like he was shooting it. I would of got a better deal. Not the honest thing to do I guess.

Good find! I've been looking for another 788 in .22-250 for a while now.

Doesn't the recoil come AFTER the shot placement? Just saying...I understand for kids that recoil can be a problem.

I have a 22-250 that is a tack driver and don't use it very much. This thread makes me want to get out and bust a few animals so I can add a few success stories of my own.

Only issue is that it's a Rem VS. It's a heavy mother with a long barrel.

I had one back in the late 60's. Tack driver. Killed a few deer with it.
It is OK IF everything is right when you shoot. If not, it is not very forgiving.
After almost losing one I decided to get a little more forgiving caliber and went for the 270.

I have a 22-250 in Rem 788. My dad left it to me and i love shooting it. I dont always hunt with it but I have no doubt i can take any Texas whitetail using it. Congrats to your son taking a doe. Please dont let him read this thread to see how many people dont "approve" of using this round. He may start demanding his next gun be a 300 win mag. so that all he has to do is shoot near the deer to kill it.

a 22-250 was my first rifle and i've shot more pigs and deer with that gun than i can count. Great little rifle! i've graduated to bigger guns now but i still love to take it out. i do tend to take head shots with it, just because i don't like to track

If you hunt enough you will loose something with whatever calibure you shoot. I've tracked deer shot with 30-06, 7 mag, 270, 243, 308 among others. Some were poor shots some were not. My buddy's dad brought his 375 H&H to the lease cause he didn't want to track anything but with a pretty good shot we tracked his deer about 50 yds. I shot a buck with my 338 at 160yds hit him right behind should and he ran almost 100. Poor choice of bullets and calibure on my part but I was young and stupid back then. Would I attempt to do what I do with my 270 or 25-06 with my 22-250? No but it's more than capable of killing deer at a reasonable distance. My 12 yr old shot 160lb buck at just over 130yds did not exit but left a blood trail ran maybe 40 yds

In 1980 I went with my mom to buy my dad a new gun. It was a Remmington 700 ADL 22-250 for his birthday. I was ten years old but for some reason I remembered that it cost $228.80. I thought that gun was awesome. Dad used it for a few years then gave it to me. I shot a deer here and there (open sites). Over the years I lost a couple of deer along the way. I finally moved on to a Remington 700 in .270. I have been much happier. A few years ago my girlfriend (now wife) started hunting with me. I gave her the 22-250 with a Leupold 3 x 9. Two years ago she shot a mature seven pointer. He ran off and we thought he'd go down. Two days later he was on a trail cam with a busted shoulder. The next day we found him dead. She now has a .243 and loves it. I think that's as small as I'd go to reliably kill deer.

Just ordered a savage Axis heavy barrel for $325 ttl.... Can't wait to shine on the trigger and see how it shoots factory ammo 150 yards and under. Cheap heavy decreased recoil for my niece

Couldn't pass up the opportunity to give it a try for $300 bucks. I have a standard barrel Axis that has killed many of Axis deer with zero tracking needed. The bullet explodes in the cavity each time. Found fragments in the spine at base of skull once on a "behind the shoulder" shot... Federal 55 gr soft points

It's ironic that this is a bowhunting site and we're debating if a RIFLE will work.

If an arrow will kill a deer, of course a 22-250 will kill a deer.

In this threads defense it is in the firearms section. And I feel like some of the arrow/broad head combinations would hit much harder than a 22-250
