Hoping we get drawn for a TYHP hunt or two. We've been applying like crazy on them and hope to get selected.
TYHP is the best hunting program ever for kids. Good Luck. I miss the days my kids were young enough to go.

That's what I hear as well, and wish I'd have found out about this program 3 or 4 years ago. I've been on TBH forever, and just never looked at public hunting or youth hunts til this year. Not a lot of hunts around the panhandle, but we're able to travel on the weekends when my kids aren't playing in tournaments for soccer baseball or football, which narrows down things a lot....but I will not complain, and believe this will be a great season.

Being up in the panhandle if you win a chance at Buffalo Lake WMA at canyon do it. Had a great hunt there last year. My son won a chance on the second draw, because all 4 spots that were drawn the first time were from Houston and they all decided it was too far, and 2 from the second drawing decided it was too far as well.

Thanks! I started applying for kids youth hunts, but realized most would be 8-12 hour drives and tried to apply for what we could reasonably do. I've also heard about the no show/ free agent list and you show up randomly and hope to hunt. I've researched a couple places and it's not a terrible idea if you have nothing else going on that weekend.

You're spot on in my opinion and I'll reach out to some other places and ask about youth no show list.

My dad and myself drew Abilene state park for gun deer either sex. Kinda just put in for it as an afterthought and almost didn't put in for it at all. Usually only put in for other places (like Chap and Kerr). We'll have fun!!! We had 10 points.

My son drew Lake Cooper state park for the youth gun deer antlerless/spike hunt. We went there last year on standby and had fun. We are both looking forward to it again this year.

Pretty sure they did, but I wasn’t paying much attention to it, tbh

Just got to looking, and they’re doing a youth hunt December 26-28 and then another one December 28-30. Then the old people come in January 2-4. I’m all for the kids getting first crack, but it makes no sense to me to have 60 hunting groups come hunt in less than a week. I gotta assume that by the time we get there all of the deer in Fairfield will be in hiding. This might be the last time we apply there, because basically the same thing happened the last time we drew Fairfield. Supposedly 4 animals were killed the week before out of the stand I drew, and all I saw was a raccoon in 3 days. When I went previously we had a hunt earlier in the season and there were animals everywhere. My dad usually picks the hunts we apply for, but next year I’ll do a little research in advance to try and find some that are a little more favorable.

Hi fellow hunters. I am glad to have stumbled onto to the thread. My father and I started applying for the public hunts when I was 13 and continued on through college. It seems we got drawn 2, maybe 3 times during that decade and won just as many standby slots. I am now 42 and the family hunt opportunities are too far to travel. I have return to the public drawn hunts within the last two years. I was 1 for 8 in ‘20, 0 for 10 in ‘21, and I’m 1 for 21 this year. 12 not selected. 8 outstanding. I am glad to live In Texas and have such a system in place. The hunting can be tricky at times, but I can say that i’ve harvested more deer on public than private. I got selected for USFS Caddo National Grassland WMA this year. It seems like the walk-in style hunting you can do with an AHP versus a scheduled hunt. We’ll give it a try cause it’s close. Happy hunting!

Congrats on your hunt Mike, plenty of deer there.

My son is going with him, he is trying to add me so I can go with them. I hope to go to enjoy the King again.

Refreshing post! I have been doing this for about 15 years. Been selected several times and got selected on a standby, once.
I think the system is working pretty darn good!
Good luck to y'all at Caddo!

I’ve got my son entered in a lot of the TYHP hunts too. This is our 1st year trying this program and my hopes are pretty high! Seems like an awesome program they have going.
