I've been on TBH forever, and just never looked at public hunting or youth hunts til this year. Not a lot of hunts around the panhandle, but we're able to travel on the weekends when my kids aren't playing in tournaments for soccer baseball or football, which narrows down things a lot....but I will not complain, and believe this will be a great season.

You're spot on in my opinion and I'll reach out to some other places and ask about youth no show list.

My dad and myself drew Abilene state park for gun deer either sex. Kinda just put in for it as an afterthought and almost didn't put in for it at all. Usually only put in for other places (like Chap and Kerr). We'll have fun!!! We had 10 points.
My son drew Lake Cooper state park for the youth gun deer antlerless/spike hunt. We went there last year on standby and had fun. We are both looking forward to it again this year.Last edited by BradBryant1000; 09-16-2022, 11:09 PM.

Hi fellow hunters. I am glad to have stumbled onto to the thread. My father and I started applying for the public hunts when I was 13 and continued on through college. It seems we got drawn 2, maybe 3 times during that decade and won just as many standby slots. I am now 42 and the family hunt opportunities are too far to travel. I have return to the public drawn hunts within the last two years. I was 1 for 8 in ‘20, 0 for 10 in ‘21, and I’m 1 for 21 this year. 12 not selected. 8 outstanding. I am glad to live In Texas and have such a system in place. The hunting can be tricky at times, but I can say that i’ve harvested more deer on public than private. I got selected for USFS Caddo National Grassland WMA this year. It seems like the walk-in style hunting you can do with an AHP versus a scheduled hunt. We’ll give it a try cause it’s close. Happy hunting!

I think the system is working pretty darn good!
Good luck to y'all at Caddo!

Hoping we get drawn for a TYHP hunt or two. We've been applying like crazy on them and hope to get selected.
