Personally would not use a mechanical on elk, but if you want a head that flies like a mechancial, cuts a wicked hole going and coming and will work on big bulls (personal experience) I would recommend the Smoke Ramcat in 100 or 125 for a BIG cut.

Ulmer Edge should work well for elk.

            Grim Reaper 1 3/8"
            This is all you need.

Or this, an often over looked broadhead is a Hades by Grim Reaper.

Unlike most fixed heads, both the back and the front edges of blade are sharp. It cuts both directions, the SS blades are .035" thick neck down to .020". Uses a V-notched trocar steel tip.

At the end of the day, any good sharp blade put trough an elks lungs will do the job.

Back cut. Kinda like a Ramcat or a, Stinger.

Yep, and the aluminum ones are pretty stout too. My brother blew one through a hogs shoulder a couple weeks ago and it was flawless afterwards. I touched the blades up on my razor sharp wheels and he has put it back in action.

I shot a bull and a cow near rifle Colorado. A couple years ago. Was using rage two blade. It was my fault. Shot placement. But I hit shoulder and didnt get enough penetration and I am shooting 68 pounds I would recommend shuttle t locks.

X2! If I had to shoot a mechanical this would be one of my first choices.Very good penetration for a mechanical BH due to its smaller cut!

How does the saying go?...something like this

"When the success of your Elk hunt hinges on your Broadhead don't use a Broadhead with hinges"

BTW, backcuts are only usefull if you don't get full pass through... that being said, I wish I had a backcut on the BH I sent towards my first deer...
