Bedding Project
First and foremost I have to give a big shout out to this thread on snipers hide:
http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubb...3391399&page=1
With the help of this thread I decided to take on this project. The original Thread and post are missing the pics but I have tried my best to take pics throughout the process and take my own notes to help you guys. At this point I have successfully done 3 rifles. 2 Remington 700’s (an ADL, and a BDL) and a Weatherby Vanguard with plenty more to go).
Material List:
Devcon 10110
KIWI neutral shoe polish as releasing agent
Play Dough
Gloves (for me)
Dremel tool with cutting bit
Masking Tape
Electrical Tape
2- ¼”x 28 bolts 3-5 inches in length
2- ¼”x 28 bolts 2-3 inches in length
Note: Weatherby Vanguard uses the M6 bolts (Brownells said that the same kit would work for the Remington 700 and the Weatherby Vanguard but that is not the case)
Gun vise
Popsicle sticks
Tooth pics
Tooth Brush
Paper Towel
Q tip
Plastic spoons
Small disposable mixing container (cup)
Razor blade or exacto knife
WD 40
Rifled Action Prep
****No pre cleaning or degreasing is necessary.
1. Remove Bolt and trigger.
2. Put two layers of electrical tape/masking tape on the sides, bottom and front of the recoil lug (not the back)
3. Masking tape the area forward of the lug (muzzle) out 4-5 inches to ensure no devcon seeps out and sticks to the barrel.
4. Prior to fitting the long guard screws Wrap Masking tape 1-2 inches back from the forearm/barrel Channel around the barrel until the receiver sits level in the stock.
5. Then Wrap masking tape 1-2 inches forward of the lug to make sure to keep the action level in the stock. To check this Make sure the action is raised so the edge of the ejection port is level with the stock. Check everything 2-3 times. The tape may let the action settle so place in and take out a few times to make sure the tape is settled.
6. Fill holes in action with play dough,
7. Don’t fill in the front and rear action holes with Play dough (you are going to be placing a guide bolt in there)
8. Do fill in the center action hole, and all other holes or gaps that are present.
9. Install the ¼” guide bolts into the front and rear action holes. Wrap masking tape around them so that they completely fill the action holes in the stock. That way the rifle lines up correctly, and no bedding material gets down in the holes of the stock (if some does you can drill it out later)
10. Apply KIWI Wax liberally; completely cover action, screws, lugs and muzzle part of barrel. Buff and then reapply wax and buff to be sure.
11. To apply the wax: use a tooth brush or something of the like to apply the wax liberally. Let the wax DRY. Then remove the wax as you would on a car. (lightly buff with a paper towel/rag). I do this twice (just in case you missed something) It will not stick if you do it this way.
12. No traces of wax should be visible on the action besides a shine. If you are worried about it sticking and leave a layer of wax you are completely defeating the purpose of bedding the rifle.
Stock Prep
1. Remove 1/8” of material from Tang, Front of lug and ensure room around entire action, and bottom metal inlet area.
2. Rough up the bedding block
3. Drill small holding holes for the devcon to fill in, in the tang area and behind the lug area as well.
4. Clean out Debris and check for fit
5. Tape off the top and outside of stock from excess bedding material when squeezed. (top of stock, rear by tang, bolt inletting) can also tape for the bottom metal inlet too now too.
6. Masking tape the area in front of the lug on the stock (barrel channel) to make sure the stock doesn’t get any Devcon on it there to be 100% free floated
7. Add Play dough to bolt inletting, magazine well, trigger well, and Safety Area. The play dough in the magazine well, and trigger well area should rise up above the lugs of the rifle, this will aid later when you pop the action out of the stock, and trim the excess.
8. Place some ¼ bolts with tape around them in the stock action holes before applying the Devcon to keep from getting it down in the holes. (Referred to as cap bolts)The tape should not allow you to fill the holes and allow more tape with some excess over the top to prevent the devcon around the 1/8” around the hole. (Enough in Circumference to keep all the Devcon out of the holes) The tape on the bolt also leaves the head exposed so once the devcon is in the stock you can reach in and grab the bolt. Remove these bolts after all the devcon is in the stock and prior to placing the action in stock.
9. Place in gun vise and make sure the stock is level, front to back and side to side. I used my scope leveling kit to make sure the stock is level.
Bedding compound mix
Mixing it up
Devcon Mixing ratio: 2.5 to 1 by volume
THE FIRST TIME I MADE WAY TOO MUCH. (I used a 5/16 of a cup (1/8th of a cup twice then 1/16th of a cup) of bedding material to 1/8 of a cup of hardener) This was 2x too much, but nobody said how much to use on the internet so I made more than I thought I would use. (Ends up 3 spoon full of material is 1/8ths of a cup, so I used 7.5 spoons full of material and 3 spoons full of hardener, WHICH IS ENOUGH FOR TWO LONG ACTION RIFLES)
Amount of compound needed for a Remington 700 LA: 3 ¾ to 5 spoons full of material + 1.5 to 2 spoons full of hardener will be used next time to not waste material.
*** The spoons I used are the plastic “food Club Premium Crystal full size Plastic Flat ware” Just the cheapies at the store.
NOTE: When scooping the hardener and material out of the containers use a separate spoon for the hardener and material. You do not want to accidently mix some hardener in with the material and mess up your entire devcon container.
Add hardener to resin and mix thoroughly with screw driver or putty knife until uniform, streak free consistency is obtained (about 4 minutes) (do not mix with popsicle stick, they break) I mixed with the spoon, in a Play dough container, since I had a lot lying around. I have also used a paper plate and popsicle sticks to mix.
Working time is 45 minutes. Let the mixture set up for 5 minutes or so (until its like putty) before placing it in the stock.
Put it in
1. Get Popsicle Sticks and really work the Devcon into the stock to remove all the air bubbles.
2. Make sure you have about the same amount front to back, if you think you have enough add some more. (Use all that you mixed, it does no good setting in the play dough container or on a paper plate)
3. Remove the cap bolts from the stock.
4. Line up the guide bolts in the receiver with the holes in the stock and lower it into the stock.
5. Make sure the free float tape guides on the barrel are setting in the barrel channel and everything is level. You should have excess that seeps out the top on both sides of the action. (If you don’t have excess seeping out the top that means you do not have enough compound in that area).
6. Resist the urge to clean the excess that seeps up out of the stock. Let it set up first (30 minutes to an hour) Then dip q tip in WD 40, press the q tip between your fingers and sponge off the excess. Not so wet that the WD 40 runs down into the bedding compound. Remove excess off top of action. With a steady hand you can also use a razor blade dipped but not dripping in WD 40 to remove the excess. (careful not to scratch the receiver)
Popping the Action from the Stock
*** Set up time is 2-5 hours (depending Temperature) allowing 24 hours to completely cure and 48 hours before use.
1. After 3-5 hours or so depending temperature you can pop the action out of the stock to do some preliminary cleaning. Watch the unused mixed devcon to figure out how it is setting up. If you can stick your finger nail (or tooth pic) in the unused stuff and not leave a mark/dimple (hard and shiny) in the devcon you can now pop free the action
2. To pop the action loose use a 2x2 piece of wood on the top of the receiver. (cover receiver with towel) Or turn over and TAP the action bolts lightly with a hammer or board. It is important to pop it evenly as it is not fully set up yet at 4-5 hours and if you pull up on the barrel you may hurt the bedding at the tang.
3. When you pop free the action you can cut the Devcon out of the mag well, forward of the lugs and trigger inlet. You should be able to cut it with a sharp blade dipped but not dripping in wd 40. If the devcon moves, slides or pulls up while you are cutting it, its too soon. Wait for it to dry some more and try again. (If you have waited too long and the Devcon will not cut you can easily use the Dremel tool to clean it up).
4. When you have the clean up done put the action back in the stock and allow it to cure. 24 hours for cure.
5. At 24 hours you can bed the bottom metal. Wax the Bottom metal as per usual, Place some taped snug, guide bolts in through the top of the stock, and bed it. Once cured knock it out with a small wooden dowel, or handle end of hammer for clean up. It goes back in snug but is good to go, and will never move under recoil.
6. While you are bedding the bottom metal you can clean the wax off of the action and barrel (WD 40 works the best to get the wax off) clean off the Play dough, re install trigger and mag box, to the rifled action. I go ahead and clean the chamber and barrel at this time so when I get it set back in the stock I’m ready to take it to the range.
7. After all is set and clean you can get ready for final fitting. A dremel tool comes in handy here as I never could get the bedding material out in front of the lug without the dremel. I cut a line through the material and then pull the tape up to remove the blob that is there.
8. Remove all the tape from the stock. If any tape is stuck with the bedding material a light sanding with the dremel tool will get it right out. Plus at this time you can sand the top exposed bedding material to a nice flat finish.
9. Make sure the stock is clean off all dust and towel fibers and check for fit. You may need a longer action screw. I bought mine in a set from Brownels for like 10 bux. (The set I bought came ¾” longer than the originals. I had to mark, cut, and grind down the screws until they were the right length.
After 24 hours from when the Bottom metal sets up you can put the rifle back together. You may need longer action screws now, Brownells and Midway sell them.
Torque the action screws back into the rifle.
Wait 48 hours until going to the range.
Enjoy.
If you have any questions please feel free to post up. I’m going to my phone now for pics, and will post them up.
