I glanced at a Beaumont Enterprise article about their campaign financing and donors.

Covey has raised $900K whereas Phelan has raised $7M.

Phelan got almost $2M from Austin (area) alone. So donations from people in Austin alone doubled Covey’s entire contributions. Hmmm…. Austin?? Nahhh, couldn’t be.

When asked about donations, a spokesman (I am assuming from the Phelan camp) said….

““David Covey is almost entirely funded by a cabal of out-of-district conspirators who, in return for their hefty donations, expect complete and unconditional control over their candidate, raising serious questions about where David Covey’s loyalties truly lie,” Wittman said. “Spoiler alert: It’s not Southeast Texas”.

Out of district? So Phelan has received more than twice from a single city (Austin) which is obviously “not southeast Texas” than Covey has in his entire campaign.

Almost 99.6% of Covey’s campaign money came from inside of Texas. Phelan though had 20% of his millions coming from outside of Texas, not merely outside of his district.

I am not disregarding that they are all politicians and will do whatever including accepting funding from virtually anywhere.

    However….

It does seem to be swayed a bit when Covey is called out for having campaign money from “out of district” when almost 100% of his comers from inside of Texas while Phelan doubled Covey’s entire campaign funding from a single city (outside of district) AND doubled Covey’s entire campaign funding from outside of Texas.

Going by the article, Phelan has received almost $4 million from Austin and outside of Texas but Covey has received $900 thousand almost completely inside of Texas.

Someone outside of the Golden Triangle really wants Phelan to control the agenda.

This if the article. It might have to require ad blockers turned off or even a subscription. I don’t know since I have a subscription to the Beaumont Enterprise however, here is the article.

You observations are very good. Do you know whether the money coming out of Austin is comprised of individual donations or is money from PACs? I also wonder about the figure that represents what Covey has raised. It seems to me that with the Big Two working so hard to oust Phelan, he wouldn't be at such a financial disadvantage. If the Republican Party accomplishes nothing else this election cycle, they are wholly committed to finding a more conservative replacement for Phelan. The party's coffers are deep; I see them throwing everything but the kitchen sink in the campaign to defeat him in that district. Perhaps I'm looking at it all wrong, though.

Are they? Is Republican Party actually committed to ousting Phelan, or are they just whispering sweet nothings?

I say the Rs are far and happy with the way things are, why would they even want to change anything?

The Republican Party in Texas is currently controlled by the far Right. This faction—the far Right faction—wants a change in House leadership because they feel the current Speaker is not conservative enough; in other words, he’s too centrist or moderate. He’s blocked passage of highly conservative bills that the other two wanted passed. So, despite the fact that all the Big Three are members of the same (Republican) party, Phelen is often seen as working in “contretemps” to the Big Two. Getting rid of Phelan would pave the way in for a newer, more conservative, Speaker of the House.

As far as the Republucan Party being happy with the way things are, nothing can be further from the truth. There is an all out war within the party between the moderates and the far right and it’s being going on for years now. Next primary cycle, make a point to notice how many incumbents are being threatened by opponents funded by their own party! It’s a sad day when your own party is throwing big money into your district in order to defeat you at the primary level because, what you end up with is elected officials whose priority in Austin is to further the Party agenda rather than representing the people in their district. This goes for both parties.

Now, I’m not saying that one side is more virtuous than the other, but I will say this: if you’re my elected representative Austin and you’re there because of my vote (and the votes of the like-minded friends and neighbors in my district), then you’d d*mn well better prioritize my issues over those of agenda-driven, philosophical ones. But, as an elected official who “owes his/her soul to the Company store,” the needs of the constituents who sent them their become a distant second in terms of priority.

Phelan is left. "Far right" is a term the left uses to describe regular ol' conservatives. Phelan sides with Democrats most of the time. That's why he's getting so much money from the leftist lobbyists in Austin and other states. Let's hope the voters in Phelan's district pull their collective heads out of their collective rear ends and vote that slime ball out of office.

I totally agree... NO Repulsican Speaker should be giving chairmanships to a DemoKraut on ANY house committee! When we win, we win and it's high time we took advantage of it. If that's FAR RIGHT, then put me in THAT camp!

I'd "like" this twice if I could!

I can tell that we are entering into the homestretch. After being virtually quiet since the primary, in the last 5 days or so I’ve gotten about 12 flyers, about 20 texts and a few phone calls that I have not answered.

                      🤞🏼

Texas is a favorite political playground for former President Donald Trump, who endorsed nearly 40 different officials and candidates for office back in 2022. This year, with most statewide offices off-ballot, he’s issued fewer endorsements in the Lone Star State.

All but one are congressional candidates. The exception comes in the Texas House of Representatives: David Covey in House District (HD) 21. Covey is running against Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont), and Trump backed him last month after floating the possibility to The Texan back in November.

I don't know if this helps or hurts Covey but should be equivalent to a few million in campaign donations.

Seems like I’ve been getting more Phelan flyers in the mail lately than Covey. Also seem to see more Phelan ads on TV than Covey as well. Phelan must have kicked his campaign into high gear.

I didn’t bother checking my mail for a couple of days and found maybe 7 flyers, mostly Covey.

Phone calls and texts are really heating up.

As crazy as the primary was, this last push to the runoff might get more busy.

                              I VOTED!

So says the little sticker that I am wearing.

A vote is personal, it’s nobody’s business, we can even lie about who we voted for so as not to offend anyone. That is why we go into a private booth and no one including the poll workers, can see what we did, including turning in a blank ballot if we wish.

So within that framework, I will say that it’s absolutely no one’s business that I did not vote for Dade Phelan and nothing y’all can do will change that!

                                Hah! Great post.

To that end, do have any sense of “the pulse” of the folks in your district or is it too close to tell?
