Joey, I'd love to do a few point-counter points with you tonight, but it's all I can do to keep my wife off me for the moment. Can we take this up later?
Can we leave Eliteist out of this? I shoot an Elite bow and have no problem there but to be called an Eliteist for a difference of opinion doesn't sit to well nor is how I feel.
Bob, Joey
from speaking w/ tomme (who assured me he spoke for LSBA) and his position coinciding w/ LSBA's on crossbows is extremely biased. I do not believe that you are truly "protecting our best interest" for the good of all bowhunters. I would not say you speak for even most of us on this matter. Though I may not be a member of this organization it is not partial or fair in this matter for it's members or for all bowhunters that you speak for. The position is extremely prejudiced and I have the proof.
Congratulations on a great debate. I was leary about where this would end up but cool heads have prevailed and it has been a good read with no one getting their dander up. The xcrossbow issue has and will be a heated conversation to all interested parties. This has been brought up many times within the LSBA and in the TPW commission meetings. Many years ago the LSBA came out with a crossbow statement (and as I cannot speak on behalf of the LSBA now as I am not on the E.C.) but the statement then and I'm sure it is still the same, was that the LSBA was not against the crossbow, only against the crossbow in the "special archery season" as stated in the law that was inacted in 1974 (with legislation) for that season for bowhunting only. Many groups, (such as LSBA Pope and Young Club, etc...), have come out with the stance that a crossbow is not archery equipment. Once again congratulations on a very interesting read.....
I would not say you speak for even most of us on this matter.
MC, you really don't like statistics do you? You should really be more informed on this issue. Though I have not read your phantom e-mail, I do know Tomme pretty well and I am certain that he is just trying to help you understand where MOST bowhunters stand on this issue. Do your homework and you'll find that this is true.

I do not need statistics of for or against. Your sample size for the LSBA poll was for members only. The TBH poll was a poll of once again mostly bowhunters that are strictly bowhunt only. I know as well as some other people on this site do enjoy all forms of hunting w/ different weapons but we are once again the minority. How would that help for me to know the statistics of these (biased) polls. As far as I know the state (tpwd) has not released a poll to all hunters in Texas to get their opinion. I could have told you right off the bat that it was going to be an automatic no from the LSBA and TBH poll.
The other problem is that the "Statistics" were not an unbiased sample of the population. This not only effects bowhunters. If you polled the entire population of hunters I am betting that the ayes and nayes would be more 50-50 or maybe even swayed more in the favor of adding crossbows.
The problem that Tomme and I have been debating is that he is down playing a key demographic and has said some comments that you, nor I, nor all of bowhunters need being said (because of the political sensitivity of the issue) especially from a person of power such as himself. I do not wish to bring the private conversations of this into public because I do respect his opinion just not the way that he is going about it. He is owed respect just as I am.
I have contacted my political contacts in Texas and have hopefully put in a good word to spread the word that adding this in would be a great opportunity to add new hunters and revenue for the State of Texas.
This has been an excellent debate and I am glad that michael and the mods have allowed us to cover this problem we have before us.
I imagine MC is speaking about the overall low percentage of Texas bowhunters who are members of the LSBA, Joey. (Oops, typing at the same time as MC)
Thank you, Bob for your thoughts on this matter. Your posts are always well thought out and very informative.
Bob & Joey, I would like to expand on the elitism subject much more, but at a later time.
I guess from now on I need to steal Snakelover's signature in posts such as these:

Agreed...but it's our duty to try and respresent the bowhunters of Texas and we are making every effort, again with great risk, to do what majority of the bowhunters feel should be done.
We knew we were "**** if you do, ****ed if you don't" with this issue...but we're not the ones pushing any agenda. We're just trying to represent and be ****ed with as many bowhunters as possible.

LOL! That's good stuff right there, Devin.
Have a good day...see you later?

Why do you think we feel it's so important to discuss this here...you think we want to alienate ourselves? You think I like to argue this topic with you? Five years ago maybe but believe it or not I'd much rather be hangin' with my kid watching "Dora"...or trying to do my part to help with a positive discussion here.
You guys should consider too that this is not the first time the LSBA Membership has been asked...or the last time. We will continue to reach our membership and the bowhunters of Texas for input on this topic.
Well, I kicked this around and watched it spiral way off topic, and I'm going to comment but not about the political standpoints...I think that should be on a thread in and of itself. I will say, however, that it's been a very tasteful debate with only few exceptions to that.
My wife used to hunt with a crossbow. One year of that and she was ready for a compound. If it wasn't for the crossbow, she would never have taken up archery at all. I told her when we got it for her that I did not support it being in Archery Season. It is a variation of archery equipment....therefore belongs in a variation of archery season, in my opinion it's called General Season.
It was stated before from at least one other TBH member that I think said it best:
it has alot more to do with the person with the weapon than the weapon itself.
This is my concern. I'm for kids, women, the disabled, and the elderly during Archery Season. I don't want the rifle hunter that will never pick up a bow to go buy a crossbow and three bolts, just to squeak another few weeks into his hunting season, only to leave the crossbow in a closet until he may or may not sight it in next year.
We've also got to be careful pointing the finger at gun hunters in general. They could campaign to make us choose either-or; Archery or General. Its happening elsewhere.
Tracy brings up a very good point. Most other states only allow archery in archery, shotgun in shotgun and vice versa. If we ruffle to much they may just cut us off Nov. 1 and they would be w/in their rights because we want Archery Only Season.
Smitty- Well stated I picked up bowhunting to add 4 weeks to my season. To some this may make me a bad non caring hunter but I do not think that i am alone saying that. Picking up a compound bow and beginning bowhunting is a cumbersomb (spelling) thing to some. We are very menacing as a group of stalking crazed vigilantes w/ sticks and strings. . and i'm proud to be one.
For me it was a little of both. 1, I wanted more hunting time and 2, the use of the bow just intrigued me. Crossbows just never appealled to me though. I just always felt if I was going to shoot a gun, I'd shoot a gun; even BEFORE I considered trying bowhunting.
For those who are interested and want to voice their opinion to the legislators themselves, the committee where the crossbow bill (HB 1334) now resides is the
I'd encourage everyone to contact the committee members and your own representatives regarding this bill. You can click on each members picture in the above link and it will take you to their own page where you can contact them.
Also, there's a public hearing on it scheduled for 2 pm next Tuesday.
