Bm2 I asked what is the diffrence, I never wanted to lower the draw weight, I am asking why it is ok for some to support this move but oppose the crossbow. There is no logic in it. My son worked his way up to the 40# at 10yrs old I just don't want to wait till my daughter is 18 before she is legal to hunt with us during archery season, and i don't think lowering the weight on one weapon and making it less efective while banning another that is currently as lethal and also shoots an arrow propelled by a string makes much sence.

what are you talking about banning? there is a time and a place for everthing, and tpwd has decided that archery only season is for archery and not crossbows, but gives you 2 months to hunt til your hearts content with a crossbow. not hunting with a crossbow in october has nothing at all to do with feeders, stands, carbon, almunium, 4x4s, compounds, all bows not wooden, all strings not sinew, all sights, stabilizers, string leaches, inserts, releases, mechanical broad heads, scent locker, tinks 69, double bull blinds, climbing stands, hog ranches, game fences, protien feeders, QDM, get all these **** exotics out of here. nothing at all.
why do we have an archery season for ? why not just make if 1 large season from october threw january.
as far as the cross bow law goes i don't think they are designed to keep people like your daughter that can't shoot a bow from hunting, but it is to keep people like me and you that can shoot a regular bow and choose not to.
like is said if this is a serious post about getting your daughter to hunt and not starting a fight on a bowhunting forum then you should either get her a drawlock or persue this with the gov.

the difference is that one, is letting younger people that can't shoot 40 lbs hunt and the other is letting everyone essentially shoot a rifle during bowseason,a crossbow. i would wager to bet that lowering the drawweight will have little to do with lowering the effectiveness of the weapon. people still lose deer with there 60 lbs. compounds that shoot a gillion fps. why not raise the weight. it has alot more to do with the person with the weapon then the weapon itself. i bet i am more effective with a 30 lb. recurve at 10 yards then you are with a 60 lb. compound at 60 yards. and beleive me i have seen people "try" to shoot deer at that distance with a compound.don't get me wrong people can do it.

I posted this on the other thread so I thought I would post it here too:
I like how it states that:
Archery is the practice of using a bow to shoot arrows.
A crossbow is a variation on the general bow design. Instead of the limbs being held vertically, they are mounted horizontally on a stock much like that of a rifle. The limb design can either be compound or a recurve but the basic concept of firing is the same. The string is pulled back either manually or with a windlass and locked into place. The string remains in this locked position, held soley through mechanical means until the energy stored in its limbs is released by a trigger mechanism, which launches the loaded missile. The energy stored in the shortened limbs is comparable to the longbow but packed into a smaller design that is also much easier to aim. Crossbows are not capable of firing the arrows of bows, but instead use shortened versions, called quarrels or bolts.
So are they archery equipment for an archery only season?

here in Indiana we are allow to use crossbows during late archery only for deer and can only take antlerless deer, if you were allowed this would it make some people happy. Do kill me just wondering. We can also use them during Spring and Fall turkey season. I would think if you did this you would not really be leaving the children out of the hunting seen.

A word of caution here
Crossbow are a lot more dangerous than guns firearms or bows. The average kids cannot unhook a crossbow other then by firing it
99% of all crossbow hunters break the basic rule of safety by walking around with a arrow/bolt on the string. they can and do go off
In Maryland in Easton MD where I used to live a 11 year old Boy was hunting with a crossbow and managed to shoot and kill himself. The last thing said was "Daddy I shot myself".
Very tragic for the family and all Bowhunters.
i can't tell you how many times I have had a loaded cocked 7 armed crossbow pointed at my guy when guys were Field & target shooting at clubs in-the USA & South Africa.
Crossbow have a VERY high failure & breakage rate when I was at Bass Pro Shots we had a about 20% reurn rate on certain brands like Barnett.
even new ones.
I am not anti crossbow but they have their place & its a place called
" really close & up personal supervision".
Thanks Tink

As of yet no real answer.
If they would make it where archery season could never be taken from us and no further intrusion of guns into it then I would be all for crossbows! As it stands I see them as being the down fall of the archery season.
I don't in anyway seeing lowering the draw weight to be the kiss of death. Those that have to "work" for it still will and those that have worked for it all their life can keep doing it a little longer.

I had to wait until my son was able to draw a compound bow set at #40 pounds until he was given the privilege of hunting deer in Texas...... now he has done that for the past 8 years..... is my son less important that he and all others before him had to achieve this before hunting.... or is your daughter better then they are and more deserving?
I hear all this "but my kids" BS a lot and truthfully its a very week argument. Take your kids with you anyway.... if they cannot perform by the law... let them wait until they can.... are you going to want them to be able to drink before they are 21 too?

Something that most are missing on, back in the early 70's many bowhunters spent endless hours, months and years trying to get a special season for bowhunters. They did this not for money, but because of the love of bowhunting. So far the only folks I have seen trying to legalize crossbows is crossbow manufacturs...to make money. I understand folks wanting to have their sons and daughter hunting with them, but youngens can still hunt with you in the general season....the October season is the archery "special season" as outlined in legislation for bow and arrows. I agree that the 40 lb minimum weight is old and needs to be revised due to improvements in archery products.....as some might remember the LSBA exeutive council tried to get the 40 lbs rule revised a few years ago and the bowhunters in the state went cazy thinking that everyone on the EC was evil....I also realize that each young person, (and some old ones too), needs education to be able to make the right decisions in the field.

Spur I see your point and my origional question was why are the same people wanting to lower the draw weight against the crossbow. And what is it about a crossbow that has so many upset, will you feel less of an archer if others are allowed to come into the woods and shoot a crossbow? For the record many here act like we all hunt the same peice of property and the same deer. Hell I have shot a bow most of my life and work at home with all the free time in the world too practice and shoot, I will probably never shoot one, but if I could meet someone and introduce them to archery, "and the definition of archery includes the crossbow" by saying come on and try it I have a crossbow you can use and if You like it I will teach you to shoot a compound. How cool would that be. Now there are several here that have implied that I am less of an archer than they are because i support this, to them I say don't let my open mind fool ya I can shoot as well or better than most and have the animals and the tropheys too prove it. I just feel that if it doesn't harm you why are you so against it. And no Spur she is no better than Cam she is just small and has been shooting very well since she was about 7 and now at 12 I see it will still be a few more years. So rather than lower the draw weight allow her to use a crossbow.

After last night and today's responses from Admin here, I think this is a fair question that needs to be asked...is TBH.com acting in support of this House Bill 1334 to legalize crossbows for all during the archery season? I mean directly and being represented as a group of Texas bowhunters?
Not trying to start any more conspiracy theories, I did try to PM or internally e-mail this concern to 'admin only' but that is not currently an option.
I also hope that with just a week until the next hearing, the "you don't have freedom of speech here" rule won't be imposed too long on this subject. It is very important to many Texas bowhunters.Last edited by tinman; 03-13-2007, 05:37 PM.
