i have a Trane 19 seer dual heat pump unit w/matching air handler, does a fine job of keeping temps at 74 deg all day, all summer long in my 2k sq.ft. home. the unit is about 7-8 years old, had to replace the expansion valve and capacitors 2 years ago, otherwise it has been fine.

You WILL see lesser energy costs, but if you go with high SEER, 2-stage or variable system, you're looking at a $10k plus expense.

Let's say you save $250 a month on energy with your new AC system, you're looking at 40 months until you see a return at a $10k initial expense. Many companies are charging far more than $10k for a 17+ SEER, 2-stage system (duct work included).

You'd be better off going with a 16 SEER single stage system and spending what you're saving vs the scenario above on door/window upgrades and insulation.

I own an HVAC company out of the Glen Rose area. I'm not a sales gimmick kind of guy, and I honestly believe that these savings stories are sales gimmicks.

If you're planning on staying in your current home for the long haul and have the budget to spend, go ahead and take a shot at that state-of-the-art system. Just remember, the newest and best has more bugs to work out as well!
I do not know where to even start to correct this statement other then just simply disagree and recommend seriously going to some Trane or any variable speed classes if you have the chance. You are missing out on LOTS of opportunity not only for you as a business owner but for your customers. Variable speed units are MUCH more then just about energy savings. I would never offer any of my customers or Tbh brothers anything I wouldn't put in my home. And if you think a single stage 16 seer system is going to be better for your consumers more then a variable speed you are far mistaken. I don't even offer the single stage 16 seer most the time.

I disagree when it is applied to people who aren't comfortable unless the temps are 71-74* like us and quite a few of our customers.

One of our customers sets their stat on hold 70* all Spring, Summer, and Fall. They are definitely benefiting from their Trane 19 SEER.
it's nice to be able to just set your stat at 74 all day everyday and not worry about energy cost and being comfortable anytime. So many advantages and the biggest is running at lower speeds longer to filter more air making home healthier and dumping humidity out all day as needed
