I don't know where that #1 rating came from, but I won't pay .50 on the dollar for the product.

Much of the quality is related to the quality of the sizing and install, but I've never heard anyone before now that recommended Am Std.

Amana or Trane and then York is our experience. 16 SEER min in 2 stage.

Never heard anyone say a good thing about York or Amana. Trane comes from the same factory as American Standard.

It's going to be a 3.5, 14 seer unit just stuck on which brand,,,
Never thought this was going to be this difficult.
any suggestions between Lennox and American standard?
        Who's your contractor?

Calahan AC and builders or something like that. Seems to be a nice guy though... I wish I could use Richard.

Run backwards from a Trane unit

I've had a bad experience with a Trane unit installed in 2009. I'm on my fourth coil. The original one started leaking in May 2014. Two months later the replacement coil sprung a bad leak. This past May the third coil started leaking bad.

It cost me around $800-$900 each time for labor and freon. Trane's customer service sucks.

The installer quit selling Trane units a couple of years ago. They are now installing Daikin units. I was told Daikin is building a huge manufacturing plant near the Woodlands.

I have a 17 year old Trane unit that has been pretty solid but talking to Froggy about his coil issues and reading about them as well with this new freon we have to use, has me second guessing using them again. Frankly it seems like all the coils are having issues with this new stuff.

I just got finished dealing with a customer who is putting his fourth coil in an 8 year old Lennox system.

Read up on formicary corrosion. A lot of new homes are full of voc's from the paints, cabinets, carpets, adhesives, etc. this is often the cause of premature coil leaks in newer homes.

Pretty much every brand I can think of has had their share of issues with leaking coils at one time or another over the last 2 decades.

As far as the discussion above, I would go with Rheem all day over Lennox if for no other reason than part cost and availability. You Dallas guys may have it different, but Lennox parts are always a pain to come by here in San Antonio.

Man that just plain sucks. You spend all this money hoping for no concern for awhile and these **** faulty coils create a bigger PITA than the ones you just got rid of......and of course the AC guy is going to install it anyway knowing its going to be an issue because their hands are tied .....if they all have problems.

I've read more issues with Rheem and Carrier AS and Goodman, Unfortunately a Trane is not an option.
I guess Lennox it is then... still not sure if this is the right choice but oh well...

If they are the same, then why are the warranty policies so different?

Our Trane and Amana units come with a 10 year (+2 option) warranty. That's the 16 SEER w/2 stg.

I have heard good news on Daikin and we are scheduling a tour of their plant and product later this month.

Go with a higher SEER rating if possible. Costlier up front but electric savings will pay for it in a couple of years. I've had good service from my 17 SEER AS unit over sized for my house and it's a heat pump unit as well.

Just curious, but what makes you choose Lennox over American Standard?

Their warranty policies aren't any different...where did you hear that?

And when you need things from American Standard you'll get much better service from them than you will with Trane and the distributors here in the DFW area will more than likely have your part in stock. Or the contractor will at least get better customer service.

I have not heard any good things from Daikin either. We stopped carrying them for the mini splits when they took over Goodman.

Lennox, like many of the other brands, is good equipment and you should be happy with your new system. Just think of it like this, its better than keeping your house at 110F, which is what it would be without your AC system...
