    CHL class too easy??

I was helping put on the shooting portion of the CHL class this afternoon and noticed some things that bothered me.

First of all I had husbands helping their wives load their gun. I understand if this was the first time ever handling a firearm, but this was the shooting test. Half the people there required help loading or clambering a round with their firearm.

Second and most important, there were people hitting dirt 2 ft short of their target at the 2nd and 3rd distance. But because of their shooting at close distance passed the test. The instructor passed them because there misses were so bad that they didn't hit paper.

I feel like we are making it too easy on people who have no idea what they are doing to carry a firearm. No joke. I saw some people today that made me feel unsafe standing behind them. I'm not saying this is the case everywhere but I know this wasn't a one time deal.

You should, but get to know your weapon and be familiar with it before you do.

I agree that its too short. I took the class 2 years ago and was shocked at how short the lecture and range parts were. I was expecting alot more class time but the instructor went through it really fast. I figured with the incresse in people wanting to get their CHL, they are making the classes shorter and easier.

The CHL class is a joke! That test should be the last step before LTC is issued.

There was a woman in our class who was taking her renewal and I don't see how she passed the original time, much less this time also...

              so,
One should have to take a hard test in able to exercise what little constitutional rights we have left ?

I too thought the class and testing was mind boggling easy. We had one guy drop his firearm and another drag her barrel across the whole shooting line when turning to ask a question. I asked the instructor is that was an immediate fail and he laughed. Our instructor was very knowledgeable and was super keen on safety but the minimum standard was grotesquely low. As much of a fan of the 2nd amendment as I am, I would be in favor of more stringent qualifications/proficiencies in order for people to EDC.

                  I've been there.
Tried helping teach the ones who didn't know.
Instructor said this is not the time to teach....

It's pretty bad when you have a better chance of getting shot taking the class than you do having to use the pistol you should be carrying without having to take the class in the first place.

NO! Come on. We aren't talking about owning a firearm, aren't talking about having to register one, aren't talking about being able to defend your family and/or property. ONLY the right to carry a firearm on your person and being proficient in how to use it without hurting yourself or anyone else.

Would you want your wife or grown child to carry a firearm without knowing how to be safe with it? No, you wouldn't. Don't make a ridiculous argument based on absolutes when this isn't even close to an absolute argument. Has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment.

Geesh, why do people of like interests try to bait each other into arguments?

The last renewal I did a woman had her gun jam . She kept trying to pull the trigger and nothing was happening. She then whips around waving her gun around saying it won't shoot.. The instructor yelled at her pretty good but I rememeber thinking how scary it is to know these are the types of people who are carrying among us.. No training or common sense whatsoever. Just imagine a high stress situation where people like her would have to make that decision to shoot. There is a high probability that multiple innocent bystanders would also be shot.. They should make it much harder to get in my opinion.. All it takes is a few CHL holders like her to shoot innocent bystanders and we all will loose our privileges...

Well said, I forgot to mention the fact that by being safe, responsible and proficient WE ARE PROTECTING THE 2ND AMENDMENT. By being irresponsible we are NOT protecting that right.

Exactly. Why do we need anyone's permission to exercise a right?

That said, there were a couple of women in my class that had either never shot or only shot like once. I recommend some familiarity with firearms before taking the class. But it's not a firearms class and wasn't meant to be.

My FIL and I took the class together. We seriously questioned why 3/4 of the class should pass. He had someone shoot his target from two bays over. The instructor was helping the old guy on that lane shoot. My FIL had shot and sat his pistol on the bench when it happened.
