A lot of the lodges have pools. Check out cajunfishingadventures.com. If you want to stay at a casino then Lake Charles is probably your best bet. Short drive down to Big Lake from there.

I don't know if your wife or kids shoot a bow but the night bow fishing around Venice/Buras is outstanding. Nothing like filling a barrel full of bow shot gamefish.

For diversity - Texas (Snook, Mangrove Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Cobia & Tripletail in Speck and Redfish waters) & Wade fishing more general public areas. You really can't wade too many areas on Louisiana - muddy bottom.

For numbers & largemouth bass mixed with redfish, as well as gators chasing topwaters - Louisiana

For sight casting redfish and or speckled trout - South Texas

For eating, laughing and drinking in fish camp - Louisiana

Here's about an hour of fishing , casting small jigs - specks near Dularge LA - Below Houma in the Lake De Cade backcountry area.

Another morning to lunch - scene in the same area near Dularge and Lake De Cade LA. Specks, Largemouth bass and Redfish. Blind casting structure, points and working fresh water to salt marsh canals, casting gold spoons and gold Colorado bladed beetle spinner baits with shrimp tail bodies in place of the traditional skirt used in bass fishing. The Largemouth prefered the spinner bait with periodic picks by redfish. Specks hit spoons, jigs and Rattletraps.

Texas summer trout run a bit larger in South Texas waters and....you can get out of the boat. Hard to get out in Cajun country.

This same area in Aransas Bay, on the right wind, I can sight cast to 25" or so specks, mixed with redfish in super skinny and crystal clear water at high tide. On the right wind and conditions, fishing Rockport and south to Port Isabel (sight casting) is tough to beat for me. Watching a red or speck miss, only to make a follow-up and hook-up visually....that's pumping action for me! In this same area, Jack Crevalle, Spanish Mackerel and Sheepshead mix and at times, are visual targets.

With the right guide, both locations are great family fun!

South Padre Island...you can rent a condo on the Laguna Madre, fish South Bay in September for Snook, Specks, Redfish, Mangrove snapper and the periodic tarpon (if the guide can play the jetty scene at slack tide) and mix that with hitting the white sandy beaches for a cool down. Closer to home and it's nearly like being in a Mexican Riviera.

Dularge area of Louisiana below Houma has some wonderful fish camps. Lodging directly in Dularge, where you can park and stay and roam. Or if the guide has a floating barge camp, out into the backcountry scene about a 45 minute sail SW of Dularge. Out in the middle of no where but there is power running on power poles - setup to provide electricity to oil interests in the region. This is hard core fishing and once your back in off the water, you are on a barge with A/C and other's in camps nearby. If the guide has his stuff together, satellite TV and showers too! Your only ride is the guide's boat and hitting town is out of the question till you return.

Port Aransas has great fishing. South Padre has great everything. Realistically you can fish the same waters from either state. Further ride in the boat fro Texas....further ride in the truck to La.

When you live 2-3 hours from Port A/Corpus like Rob and I do.....well.....yeah, Texas.

                      AtTheWall,
Sounds like you enjoyed the Dulac area. We fished a lot of redfish tournaments in the ponds around Lake De Cade. The ponds over there are not as good for sight fishing. When you find the right water the fish light up like orange pumpkins. It is a sight fishermans Dream on the east side of the river. Headed to Mansfield tomorrow. See if I can find some jumbo specs laid up on the western mud.

LA by far for #'s...Let me know if you want my buddies number in golden meadow or Delacroix. Both are tournament redfisherman and if the fish are around they are going to put you on them.

What he said. Big lake. Best spec, flounder, and red fishing you'll ever get into.

As far as I'm concerned Louisiana will ruin you.
Texas is fun although seems to be more crowded every year.
I say Louisiana hands down. We went there (grand isle) the first time when I was about 11. We still talk about how great that trip was. This is actually my favorite time of year to go. Big redfish stack up like cord wood in the backwaters. Gold cast master spoons are all you need to take with you.
