Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks eat mainly plants, including smartweed, grasses, swamp timothy, amaranth, sedges, bindweed, and nightshade. They typically forage at night, leaving roosts at sunset to fly to foraging areas. They feed in fields or by dabbling in shallow ponds.
    Negative ghost rider...

Black-bellied Whistling-Duck feast on deer corn! They will scoop up hand corn usually about 5 minutes before the deer get there. They have also been known to perfectly time an automatic corn feeders and have it all eaten within seconds.

Surprised to hear people don't like eating them. We used to shoot a ton of them in Garwood and I think it's in the top two best eating ducks out there. Teal breasts wrapped in bacon are out of this world....but BBWD is its equal in every way.

The legs on those things are huge and are fantastic on the grill.

I can vouch for their ability to tell time. 15 minutes before the feeder goes off they start circling. 10 minutes after it goes off the corn is gone. They are pretty easy to spook. I figured they are screwing up my hunt anyway so I have been getting out and chasing them off. Numbers went way down almost immediately.

I have not seen them feeding in the dark. I have one timer set for after dark and pigs are getting that corn.

I just remember about reading that 10% of there diet is eating snails, insects and other invertebrates.

They eat great but find them to be a dumb bird. They love a Mojo Mallard. Four us us were hunting close to the coast whe a big group came by and hovered over the Mojo. We shot 11 out of the group and the rest flew off about 100yds to come back and hover again. Another 8 got shot and they finally left for good. Dang near a limit and had not even shot the usual ducks yet.

I will agree to disagree. I will not even shoot those nasty things anymore.

Be careful feeding them around your house, don't want a bird flu outbreak
