I hope this thread stays civil and doesn't get sacked for two reasons:

1.) there is some good info on both sides for people to consider

2.) inquiring minds most know more details on why we can ignore the instructions on a pizza box to take off the plastic before baking in the oven

Like recommended by the NHTSA, a minor crash no problem. A major crash replace it. Or not. Your call
But not having our seat belts replaced at the same time is asinine. The belt that holds the car seat in took the same force as the car seat itself. Have any of you screaming for replacing the car seat replaced the car seat belt? Bet not one of you did.

Oh yeah, the NHTSA is a government agency right? We all know they don't lie and tell half truths...

Actually yes I would... haven't had to though... knock on wood... but you bet I would and not just for my kids.

True Jenn. But they fail new all the time and have recalls for manufacturing and engineering design flaws.
I'm not saying don't get a new one but that's not 100% either. There's no guarantees in life ever.

This thread has gone astray! Why would you deter anyone from replacing a safety item??? Especially when his insurance co will buy him new seats???

Flywise, I guess when you department goes to replace your bunker gear after 10 years of service, according to NFPA 1971, you say " Mine looks fine, I think I will keep it" how does that go down with your chief? We are in the life safety business, lets not deter people from making the SAFEST choice!

Of course there are no guarantees but I'll take all the precautions I can...

Seriously, before this thread have you ever thought about changing out seat belts after a car wreck?? Be honest. I never heard that or thought about it.

I'd also be worried that by ignoring the Nhtsa guidelines for replacing the car seats you'd be denied your bodily injury claim by your insurance provider if, god forbid, you got into an accident, the car seat failed, and a kid was hurt.

Fortunately, the only car accident I have ever been in that was more than a minor fender bender was a head on collision that totalled my car when I was 19 so I've never had to make that decision nor have I ever had to replace a car seat from an accident either.

I have to agree with this.

And I would change out the seat also in a major accident and would never try and talk anyone else from doing it also.
My daughter and 1 Yr old grandson had a very minor bump from behind about a week ago. Could see any damage at all to her rear bumper and didn't awake Grandson. She ran out and bought a new one. Now it won't be long befor she would need a bigger one but she bought because people said to...

Modern seatbelts have pretensioners that pull the belts tight and lock them down. The seatbelts will be replaced at the bodyshop.

But, before this thread, had you ever thought about that possibility or told about it? I'm almost 60 and never heard that till flywise brought it up.
