I do ALLOT of trapping at the ranch to prevent the main predators ( yote and bobcat ) from getting to all the species of deer we have. Always get the incidentals in the pass thru snares and leg holds on the holes dug under the highfence.
Even though they all are varmits ( coon, armadillo, skunk, possum, yote , fox and cat ) I hate to know that they were in pain and duress for even over night. Kill em quick and fast is one thing,.... slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww suffering and death ? Not my thing.
When I'm done guiding, closing down the ranch and ready to go home-- Always make it a point to pop off the 20+ traps I have until I guide the next round and check them every 12 hours.

          Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh,....
I had a lease up north of Boerne for awhile and had a terrible coon problem. being 45 min away,.. was not something I wanted to check traps (dukes or legholds )
so I started doing the bucket and conibear trap method. I would set 8 up around the feeder at a time. Every one popped off with dead coon.
I went from COON MADNESS to almost ZIP in 4 sets !!!
I did not have to worry about anything suffering.... just used my calipers to open the traps and in every week when I went up - nothing but skin and bone left !

Do you have one of the new cameras that you can remotely turn off?

220 Conibears ( perfect size for coon, skunk, armadillo, fox ) I've even had great kills on BOBCAT with them - will on avg. cost about 10bucks a trap.
Cheapest to get them USED and in a GROUP from folks off Ebay. (save some $$$)
                check it out :
                http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_saca...ear+220&_frs=1

I've hit up some of the local resturants to ask them to save me their PLASTIC BUCKETS they get mayo, pickles, etc.... and wha la ! All the buckets you want.

Do you need buckets ? nawwwwwwwwwww,... it's just about a backing that forces the coons to commit thru the conibear jaws.

*****WHEN TRAPPING FOR COON ON A FEEDER AND NOT WANTING TO GET SO MANY POSSUM AND SKUNK - USE A SWEET TYPE BAIT OR NON PUNGENT ATTRACTANT.
I USE MARSHMELLOW, PEANUT BUTTER, OR DRY CAT FOOD.

I DON'T USE ANYTHING LIKE SARDINES OR WET FISHY CHEAP CAT FOOD - HAD TO MANY GRINNERS AND STINKERS IN THE CONIBEARS

This time of year, my guess is he wouldn't last long in that trap whether you went to shoot him right away or not. The heat, combined with their exertion in trying to get out, deadly pretty quick. When I've got my Duke's set, I check them daily, and I've still had once or twice when I got there to find a freshly dead coon.
