the only time a "tie" can occur during the WC is in the round-robin group stage which we are currently watching.

in the FIFA World Cup, there is no OT or "golden goal" during the round-robin group tournament (US, Ghana, Germany, Portugal). 8 groups of 4 teams play to accumulate the most points. The top 2 teams (based on points) advance to the knock-out round.

The KO stage is single elimination and involves extra time and shoot-outs to determine the winner if tied after regulation. No ties during this stage.

Remember the famous Brandi Chastain goal ? US and China were tied after regulation and overtime. They went to a sudden death PK shootout which Chastain sealed the deal for the US to win the women's 1999 WC

Ties are stupid. Period. Just keep playing until somebody wins and you pick the two teams with the most wins to advance. It's simple. The object of ANY game is to win. So let the games have a winner. And then we wouldn't have to worry about all these dumb tiebreakers.

Also, any time there exists a situation where two teams playing each other can solidify their advancement by tying each other it is idiotic.

I stepped back and tried to have an open mind about kickball, soccer, futbol, whatever its called. After weighing the pros and cons carefully it ended in a tie.

I've never played the game..Had a Soccer ball when I was a kid,and it was always flat...The "athletes" that play this game, live, and die by it..Gotta respect that..A lot of them do it for "Dam" near nothing..I consider myself an athlete, and I do the same,"Dam near nothing"...The passion they have for wanting to "grind you" into the dirt,is immeasurable when it comes to professional athletes in the U.S.A.,that never compete, outside of their comfort zone...These guys are for real, each and everyone of em...Every country.

Saying soccer is better than baseball is just un American.

As I said in the other thread.....in the USA the people that play soccer are the ones that suck at baseball, football, basketball....etc.

I follow the World Cup. It's pretty cool but the tie is just ridiculous and I understand it's a round robin about points. OK, how about this one? If the US and Ghana both have 4 points after pool play Ghana can advance on goal differential even though they lost head to head. Now that is goofy soccer rules.

At my high school this was totally the case...it may not be now but it was then....

As a kid, soccer was somewhat popular, but once kids were able to play for their middle school/high school, it changed to the big three and track....

I played soccer, hockey (ice), football and baseball growing up...loved playing all of them...if I had to pick one (which clearly I never had too...ha) it would be Hockey...just so much fun...the best workout of all...plus it was ok to hit people with or w/out gloves!

I would love to post some replies, but some dude will be along to tell me to quit discussing the lack of popularity of soccer, on a don't like soccer thread, designed for people to post who don't like or don't understand soccer. So I won't say how soccer is not as popular as the other big 4 American sports, never will be, and ties suck.

Baseball, Cal Ripken Jr. Credits his outstanding footwork to playing soccer. Football Andrew Luck first played organized soccer overseas, so did Kobe Bryant & Steve Nash. They couldn't hack in soccer. But U prob weren't talking about scrubs like that. Real athletes..

I really tried to watch this world cup and give soccer a chance but after watching the last game i just gave up. My thoughts immediately after the game....

And that why they play the full 90 minutes, no i mean 94, no i mean 95. Then a tie. Awful third world bs. Im done

Since I watched this tournament from the beginning until that game I am entitled to my opinion. The fake injuries are beautiful.
