Watching the USA game and was finally getting into it a little and was thinking it’s not the greatest game in the world but as long as the USA is playing it’s not that bad. Portugal comes back and ties it up and I’m like yes we get a little overtime action, we can do this USA! Then everybody walks off the field and it ends in a tie, a TIE! How and why would you end a game that important in a tie! I’m backing to not liking soccer now! That’s why it will never be as big as the other sports here in a America because we are all about winning. I know the NFL can end in a tie now also but at least they give you a chance to win. Not mad at our team because from what I could tell they seem to play good but just hate it ended without a winner and a loser. Ok just had to get that off my chest. GO USA !

shoot outs suck....you play that hard for that long only to determine a game by a point blank shot?? no thanks! OT until a score in my opinion.
you really want to complain about sports....how about baseball games and that pathetic excuse?? 162 games in the middle of the summer that last 4+ hours?? they should be capped at 2 hours...and put a little hustle in the pitchers...bucket a balls to keep throwing...no 5 minute warm ups between innings....so flippin boring! and the most arrogant of any "athlete" and yes that's in quotes because look at some of those fat as_es...
hahaha...

Not sure why its such a hard concept for some to grasp. It is a ROUND ROBIN for the first round. Its about POINTS, not wins. Our problem with American Sports is we focus solely on the win, not the body of work. We are the only country who crowns its champions based on an end of season tournament, not on the best team that season. Hockey changed to appease US fans who couldn't understand that its about points. That's why they had to only give 2 points for a win instead of 3. No, we want a win or a loss and he who is playing best at the END of the season is our champion. Again, first stage is a round robin, the two teams with the most points move on to round 2, where you WILL have a winner every match. There are things we don't like about every sport. I HATE how American football is an hour on the clock yet it takes 3.5 hrs to play. I HATE how baseball takes so long and is slow. I HATE how hockey shifts are so short. I HATE all the timeouts in Basketball. But, I appreciate the games and can still enjoy them win/lose or draw.

It's the group stage. You play for points to get out of the group. Three points for a win one for a tie and zero for losing. After next week the matches are single elimination. If there's a tie at the end of regulation the teams will play two extra time halves of fifteen minutes each. If the score is still tied, it'll go to penalty kicks (best of five).
Weak teams playing the strongest teams play for a draw so they'll defend all match long to try and at least get a point out of it, because attacking a team like Germany when your Korea is a recipe for getting smashed. That's why you'll hear people complaining about a bad call ruining the game when a team has lost by multiple goals. Their strategy had been to defend with all ten of their players but had to start attacking after being scored on, and get smashed as a result.
Ties on points at the end of the group stage are resolved by goal difference. The US team has scored four goals and let in three so their difference is plus 1. Portugal has scored three and let in seven so their difference is -4. If the US loses to Germany 1-0 and Portugal beats Ghana 5-0 then Portugal goes through on difference because the US will be at 0 difference and Portugal at +1. Y'all can figure out the other scenarios.

Only thing I don't like is 1) all the flopping!!! I saw ppl being stretchered off the field for a cramp! 2) stoppage time lets extend/end the game when ever either put in timeouts or when the games over it's over. An if the balls past midfield there shouldnt be off sidesLast edited by drop dead fred; 06-23-2014, 09:33 AM.

In the words of Herm Edwards " You play to WIN the game"
