I have home protection, but I don't have an AR-15. I do have a friend that has a bunch of 'em... If I can make it to his house, when the SHTF, then we will use his.

Anyone not own an AR?

I did not think I wanted one or needed one until I bought one. I bought it out of fear that I would not be able to own one in the future. However, now that I have one it has become one of my favorite weapons. I use it for plinking, hogs, dogs, and other pests. I never was a plinker until I bought an AR. It is akin to shooting a 10/22, so much fun that you don't want to stop. In addition once you start the wife the and kids want in on the action which I think is good thing. As far as expense, I shoot a M&P Sport 1/9 that shoots almost all types of 55 grain projectiles the same. It costs me $.37 per round for wolf gold, or up to $.50 per round for Hornaday soft points. For what I hunt these projectiles work fine. This is not nearly as expensive as 25-06 which is what I have traditionally shot. 25-06 ammo generally starts at $1 per round. I still love my 25-06 and definitely use it for deer and larger, but I do not carry it as much anymore.
An AR is not my first choice for home defense for some of the same reasons stated above. I use a Winchester 12ga. pump that I have had since I was kid and a revolver for home defense. However, I sleep so hard, my family jokes I will likely never know what hit me
Have fun and be safe.
