I've been collecting high end knives since I was in high school. Just like some collect certain handguns or shotguns I like the knives of certain makers. Just like a fine shotgun, rifle or handgun they're an investment.

I do have a couple that I use though and their ability to hold an edge is another reason for the $$$...quality.

Some folks collect antiques, classic cars, some collect guns and knives.

    I like guns and knives.

I don't want to have to baby it....I drop stuff, I cut the jaw aging teeth and its just not something I want to do. If I spent a lot of money on a knife I would feel like I needed to display it....and Id rather buy a gun. I did buy a few Stics to use....

I don't think I would ever buy one for myself, but I am having custom knife made for my best client. I'm confident it will be a good investment.

I have 3 Stics and use them. A $1K+ knife is not what I want in life but if it blows up your skirt then go for it.

I use the knife that they give away at the elk foundation. I'm not trying to look pretty as I gut a hog. I simply want the right tool.

A Custom knife is just that - custom - I make knives for very specific tasks if you want a good animal harvesting knife I make that! If you want one for chopping, batoning and stickin pigs well I make that! If you want one that only needs sharpening once or twice a year I make that! If you want a keepsake that still outperforms other knives I make that too! When I'm in the woods I like to carry a survival style knife and a smaller knife for precision work - kinda hard to get a small splinter out with one and can't use the other to chop wood! I've got a survival design carried by one of top 10 survivalists in the world! Her own words about it are on the main page of my website at chopsknives.com and on her first outing she went to stick a pig and her whole hand ended up inside its chest!!! On the other hand I designed a folder for a cancer surgeon and he took a few minutes to call me and go over what a precision instrument I had built for him and how HE was in awe of MY hand skills - a surgeon!!!
For me it is an all consuming passion and I put my heart and soul into each and every knife!
Phillip Fields and metalmangeorge thanks for the VERY kind words!!
and the other names in this thread that I've built knives for - wink!

Here is my custom Filet knife. I promise you it is worth every penny. I can clean fish faster with it than most can with an electric.

If money was not an issue, I would own a mix of Chops Knives. Everything I see on this site is gorgeous.

Arrogant ? To me, " it's only money " means that money is only worth what you can buy with it. Sure not good for anything else !

I think some of the other makers have covered the ground here pretty well, but I'll add a couple of things. One of the posts on page one mentioned that you're buying based on the reputation and image of the knifemaker... true, but not true. What is it that makes a $1300 knife cost that much? Just a shot in the dark here with the numbers, but I'm guessing there'd be $300 worth of Damascus, $200 worth of handle material, and about 20 hours of skilled labor. It's kind of the difference between seeing a live concert by a professional musician vs. listening to your kid play his guitar in the garage. You're not paying the professional for the 1.5 hour concert. You're paying him for the 10,000 hours he practiced to get that good. There are many good hunting knives at walmart. There are also many good customs in the $150-200 range that will out cut any of the Chinese crap at walmart. At the same time, having made, sold, and handled (from other makers) a fair share of $150 knives, there are definite differences between the knives in the 150 range vs. the knives in the 300+ range. It goes back to how many notes did they miss in the song, and how bad did it make the song sound. In the end of the day, most of the time, you do in fact get what you pay for. If you want excellent hand made custom work by a skilled craftsman, it's going to cost you. If you want to pay a little less, you can get good performance if you can tolerate some fit and finish issues. Or you can buy a knife at Walmart.

But it is a fighting bowie knife, not a pocket knife. Hand forged to my dimensions for best balance and fit. Even had the pleasure to train will Bill Bagwell for proper technique.
Everytime in get in a bowie knife fight I always regret not buying that one.

I carry one daily and use it. I have several and will continue to do so. If some think I'm arrogant so be it.
