A friend of mine in Colorado hit a whitetail in the back. Never recovered the deer. 3 years later, he shot the same deer. When he dressed it, he found his broad head in the deers spine. Kept the section of spine with broad head stuck in it as a souvenir.

Don't worry about people talking smack about the size of the deer. If you want to hold out and able to let bucks get mature than so be it, but lets not forget what hunting is supposed to be about and that is meat to eat. That is the purpose if my hunts. Sure I try to get the best buck I can and it sounds like you were doing just that.
Now the shot placement. It does look like you may have shot this buck in the right spot. I would guess that the broadhead did not open right. It can happen. Just because he was still hit In the right spot does not mean victory. Look on how many stories of people that went to the hopital and lived because the doctor's said if it was a fraction of an inch this way or that way they would have died. I say this could have been your buck. God bless.
