A friend of mine in Colorado hit a whitetail in the back. Never recovered the deer. 3 years later, he shot the same deer. When he dressed it, he found his broad head in the deers spine. Kept the section of spine with broad head stuck in it as a souvenir.

Stranger things have happened. I owned a processing plant for several years and I was AMAZED at the old gunshot and arrow wounds on the mature bucks. Almost all my customers were from DCNF.

I am surprised nobody has given you any shine for the deer being so young!

Oooppps! I guess I just did!

I agree, the spots marked would have/ should have resulted in a deer that would not still be posing for the camera!

I actually thought back to your thread with the liver/lung/heart shot deer that you finally recovered. Maybe I'll get him next year and solve the riddle.

I've heard of there being a possible "hollow" spot in that area. Having a good blood trail but no deer, and seeing the same deer the next year.

Thanks for your contribution to the thread I knew my hunting opportunities would be limited with welcoming a new baby into the family. As it turned out, I only got to go 3 times all year. I ate tag soup: TX, OK and KS, well over $650 in unused tags. That buck was gonna be meat in the freezer. Sorry he doesn't live up to your lofty standards.

                  Carry on.

Sorry you didn't get him. I have seen some deer shot in some really good places that were eating corn a day or two later. Those rascals can be tough. Deer was plenty big enough to kill. Some people are getting too caught up in slamming everybody on this site.

Second this. What someone chooses to shoot might not be what I choose to shoot, but if it's legal and they eat it, it should be all good.

Don't worry about people talking smack about the size of the deer. If you want to hold out and able to let bucks get mature than so be it, but lets not forget what hunting is supposed to be about and that is meat to eat. That is the purpose if my hunts. Sure I try to get the best buck I can and it sounds like you were doing just that.

Now the shot placement. It does look like you may have shot this buck in the right spot. I would guess that the broadhead did not open right. It can happen. Just because he was still hit In the right spot does not mean victory. Look on how many stories of people that went to the hopital and lived because the doctor's said if it was a fraction of an inch this way or that way they would have died. I say this could have been your buck. God bless.

Daniel the white hairs on your arrow and fatty substance both indicate a hit on the brisket to me, I've never hit one there with a bow, but with a rifle they tent to act just like a heart shot, except all you ever find is some white hair at the point of impact and a very short small blood trail.

This is what happens when you hit a deer right there.
