The 2013 preseason HeismanPundit.com Heisman Straw Poll
Total Points (with first place votes in parentheses)
1. Johnny Manziel, So., QB, Texas A&M — 33 (4)
2. Jadeveon Clowney, Jr., DE, South Carolina — 30 (1)
He sounded rather frustrated in the clip they played on the radio, stating that it would be a lengthy decision with multiple people on whether or not Johnny started.
I follow Jimmy Burch and saw his updates from it. This is what stood out to me.
#TAMU official reads Hyman's statement re: @JManziel2 for 2nd time today before start of Sumlin's into remarks.
Sumlin on backup QBs: "That is still an ongoing competition" between Joeckel, KHill at #TAMU. Both from Tarrant County high schools.
Sumlin said he has been "pleased with the progress of both guys" vying to back up Manziel. Both have been rotated through w 1's
Sumlin: When push comes to shove, have to put team needs above individual needs as a FB coach b/c FB is "ultimate team game."
Sumlin says he frequently talks to team about importance of truth and trust
Sumlin reiterates earlier comments, saying "lot of people" will be involved in decision re: whether JM plays Sat. Says he can't discuss.
Sumlin: "For lot of people, things are rigid all the time. I can't tell you how many times, as coach, you have to make game-time decisions."
#TAMU coach Kevin Sumlin: "A lot of things going on internally right now are different from the perceptions outside."
#TAMU OC Clarence McKinney on calling game if backup QB in lineup: "We call it the same. We'll call plays we think will work."
Lots of interesting read between the lines info in here for me. This is pretty much his tweets back to back. I am also reading that Sumlin got hit with the Aggie Code question and stumbled to answer it.
The ESPN reporter tried to troll Sumlin about the honor code...that's first rate reporting right there folks. ;(
I can flip this around. If the Aggie Honor Code is important to you and all Aggies, wouldn't you want this question answered with integrity and truth. If the Aggie Honor Code is a huge deal (which I believe it is) wouldn't you want the school, the students, the coaches to adhere to it?
Bdchorn, you are right that the NCAA has a much lower level of proof. But Johhny has his own set of lawyers and if the NCAA suspends him without solid proof then they could find themselves in a civil court without evidence that they can use.
This is a huge grey area surrounding athletes autographs. Think of how many autographed items you have seen auctioned off by alumni groups for their benefit? The players didn't get paid but they could have known that someone was going to get paid. So by the NCAA rules they are guilty. So where do you draw the line?
Obviously accepting money for your signature, wether you agree with the rule or not, is a violation, but I think the NCAA doesn't want to get into that grey area in a court of law.
I think it's pathetic that players cant make money on their namesake but if JF is lying at all then suing the NCAA would be incredibly foolish. The NCAA can then subpoena the memorabilia brokers and ESPN and the courts will force their cooperation or hold them in contempt. Hopefully the NCAA makes a statement quickly and all this crapola ends

I think it is a fair question.
And I completely disagree. The ESPN reporter was looking for a sound bite that would put the school in a bad position if JFFdoes play amidst the accusations of wrongdoing. Did you catch that word? Accusations, not proof.

NCAA called. They want the proof you are holding on the JM allegations.

You have GOT to get over this ESPN against ATM conspiracy that you've dreamed up! Ask Cam Newton if it's just JM and the ags, ask Tiger Woods, Kobe, or a thousand more! JM is not the first to kick the ant hill and have espn look to dig up dirt on him.
If the NCAA is investigating a Heisman winner the week before the season starts, ESPN WILL report it! It's called NEWS, man!
