I am wanting to bump up the range of my bow, right now I am very comfortable at 70 yards but I am really trying to focus on elk hunting for the next few years while I let some deer on my property to grow and mature. My question for whoever knows is how do I get the maximum range out of my bow?? What sites are going to have enough adjustment for that? I am shooting the HHA optimizer right now but have it maxed out at 70 yards. I am looking to get up to around the 150 to 170 range. I know a lot of people dont agree with shooting that far but I would never take that shot on an animal unless I feel 100% comfortable. I am shooting a Z7 Xtreme at 74 lbs at a 28.5" draw, 340 FMJ's cut to 29" with 100 grain shwackers and muzzy trocars. What do y'all suggest to get more range out of this setup?

Any 7 pin sight will get you to 80 yards and that is a might far shot even for an elk. Not saying it cannot be done, but that is stretching it. Just how comfortable are you? When I shot a lot I could keep 4 out of 5 arrow in a 5" square at 70 yards with broadheads. Not saying you cannot do even better, but i would not suggest shooting that far on that big of an animal even with a kill zone that is pushing 16" by 16". Just my opinion though. And yes, I have killed animals at further distances than 70 yards when i was shooting every day and at long distances.

I am all for long shots, but if your suggesting shooting a bow at 150-170 yds then please reconsider. There are so many factors that go into making a shot like that. Your pin is going to be the same size as the elk by the time you look through the peep sight making virtually impossible to pick a spot in the vitals. Even rifles have to consider wind drift at that distance and they travel infinitely faster than arrows. Please don't take shots at any game beyond 60 yds. I trained for elk camp out to 60 yds and that it a long shot. Please reconsider your ideas about shot distance. That is an unethical distance for archery equipment

The expertise and thrill of getting 20 to 30 yards is why I bowhunt. My 30.06 has been in the closet for 30 years.

again, I am not going to take a shot I don't feel comfortable with. I am not and will not be taking a shot at anything (other than a pig) at 150 yards, I just want to be able to practice at that kind of range. If I can get comfortable at that kind range practicing then a 40-50 yard shot will feel like a 10 yard shot.

Rocky is right. Shooting at longer distances on a target might work and probably does, but put a living breathing big bull out in front of you at under 50 yards and if you do not shake like a dog, well you know, then you might want to find some other hobby. I have hunted elk many years and killed several bulls, but the last bull I shot, the 2 guys with me told me I had to breathe and I missed the first shot at 38 yards, but luckily he turned, but stopped at 44 yards and I drilled him after I resumed my breathing. This is all on video and you can hear my shallow breathes and the other 2 telling me to breath! Practice at 70 to 80 yards and you should be fine.
