Just how I can see it the other way but I do see your points.

The other is that teachers are just people and people make mistakes. Case in point. When I was in high school, a kid came into a classroom and open fired and hit a teacher in the jaw with the bullet and then he ran off. The teacher lived. But if the teacher had a gun on him, he would, in the heat of the moment, take that gun and protect himself and at that very point of unclear thinking, possible injure another child. You can't predict what a bullet does after it passes through one body. It can change direction and potentially kill another innocent. Most instances come and go in 4 seconds. Around children, you have think through your actions. So, I see your point on both. I just don't think guns around children is a good thing. School kids do stupid things.

The department for homeland security says to run first, then hide, then fight... in that order.... the schools are taking out the best defense you have in that situation. (Read the Active Shooter Book that DHS put out sometime its good info).

Other side of that... What happens when the parent arrives to pick up johnny and you tell him hes dead because you made him sit in a room and be a victim.

I dont have all the answers but I can tell you that flight should come first. Lockdowns only make it easier for an active shooter. And in fact I'd sue your pants off if you made my son sit in a room and wait to be shot. Lockdowns are a lawsuit/ death trap waiting to happen.

But back to the main point, and maybe the flip side of my own argument, I'd feel a WHOLE lot better if I knew during that lock down that my son was huddled in the corner behind desks and his teacher had her glock racked and loaded, holding steady on the door. Than her balled up in the corner with him.

I cant imagine the things those 323 students and teachers must have felt as their circumstances were handed to them... or how their families felt knowing they were just as defenseless as their loved ones were inside the building.

    Give em a Fighting chance.

As far as that kid coming in and shooting his teacher in the face... he should have been shot right then and there... he wasnt trying to shoot his jaw off.. he aimed for his head ad lucky for the teacher he hit his jaw... but his intent was to kill an innocent person, and theres no room for those type of people.

In training, CHL or otherwise that teacher would know that bullets can change direction... ricochet and go through walls... Train the license holders to make educated decisions based on their surroundings.

Here I thought we were talking about something completely different and Michael Berry came to mind. Not the real MB on TBH, the radio guy in Houston.

I kind of prefer CC, that way the bad guys still have to wonder who is packing.

And yes I remember the thread... I would LOVE to take the 16 hour DHS course. (not saying it should be mandatory) just saying I'd personally like to sit through it... How was it?

I have my CHL and am satisfied with that. Open carry will only allow my weapon to go from concealed to plain view. Nothing more. Open carry will not increase the places guns are allowed. I could see more places putting up 30.06 signs because of it, not that I want that. We have a bunch more pansies in this world than there were 100 years ago. Not everybody will like sitting next to a guy in a restraunt with a pistol in plain view while there will be others that will feel safer.

              It's a catch 22.

The Oklahoma law went into effect today. I just left the busiest gun store in Oklahoma City where I eat lunch a couple of times a month. I noticed NO ONE except employees were carrying openly (they have for years inside the store). I ask a guy working there if there had been many and he stated that the staff had not seen anyone and did not expect to see many.

The reason I like the option of open or canceled is so I no longer have to worry about accidently exposing a gun that is otherwise required to be canceled. No longer do I have to be concerned about going to jail for simply reaching for my breakfast cereal off the top shelf at Wal-Mart or my jacket blowing open while walking across a parking lot.

I read an interesting comparison about the differences between Democrats and Republicans. It said in part, if you do not like guns and you are a Republican you do not buy one, if you do not like guns and you are a Democrat you outlaw them so no one can own one. If you do not want to carry open, do not do it, but you should not attempt to keep me from doing so if I desire.

I'm for it as long as I have the choice to conceal. Open carry could make you the first target in a bad moment. But in a crowd where there could be other open and concealed weapons it might be a big deterrent.

I don't know. I've never been a LEO so I can not compare them to teachers.

How many LEOs get their weapon taken from them? It's only common sense that it would happen to more teachers versus LEO's. I mean who would you rather try and take a weapon from, an in shape LEO or a school teacher?

But if you guys can trust all teachers to keep their weapon on them at all times (never briefly place in desk etc.), be strong/fast enough to never allow it to be taken away, and never get over stressed and "snap", then great I can see why you have no problem allowing teachers to carry.

It was long, but I found it quite interesting in the thought processes behind the mechanics of a lock down. In the real world they work and have worked during real active shooter issues both here and abroad, the class even went into the tactical issues faced by officers and options...in all it was a good class...

I've seen some school teachers in better shape than some LEO's.
