The department for homeland security says to run first, then hide, then fight... in that order.... the schools are taking out the best defense you have in that situation. (Read the Active Shooter Book that DHS put out sometime its good info).
Other side of that... What happens when the parent arrives to pick up johnny and you tell him hes dead because you made him sit in a room and be a victim.
I dont have all the answers but I can tell you that flight should come first. Lockdowns only make it easier for an active shooter. And in fact I'd sue your pants off if you made my son sit in a room and wait to be shot. Lockdowns are a lawsuit/ death trap waiting to happen.
But back to the main point, and maybe the flip side of my own argument, I'd feel a WHOLE lot better if I knew during that lock down that my son was huddled in the corner behind desks and his teacher had her glock racked and loaded, holding steady on the door. Than her balled up in the corner with him.
I cant imagine the things those 323 students and teachers must have felt as their circumstances were handed to them... or how their families felt knowing they were just as defenseless as their loved ones were inside the building.
Give em a Fighting chance.
As far as that kid coming in and shooting his teacher in the face... he should have been shot right then and there... he wasnt trying to shoot his jaw off.. he aimed for his head ad lucky for the teacher he hit his jaw... but his intent was to kill an innocent person, and theres no room for those type of people.
In training, CHL or otherwise that teacher would know that bullets can change direction... ricochet and go through walls... Train the license holders to make educated decisions based on their surroundings.
