The idea of energy transferring into the body and stopping someone is a theory and is bogus at the levels produced by defensive pistol rounds. Two 300 pound NFL football players that run into each other helmet to helmet probably transfer more than a ton per square inch of force and it is all absorbed. They don't drop dead.

I shoot a Combat Comander in .45 ACP. I use basic Winchester FMJs for practice and JHPs for defence. The price on a box of 50 is not a big deal.
Even though a .45 FMJ is already the size of a .357 expanded, the idea is to dump as much of the bullets energy in the target as possible. It is NOT like bow hunting where you want a hole on both sides so you can track him!
FMJs will kill someone, but it does no good if the crack head has already taken your gun and beat you to death with it.
Edit: Not all of us use a .45.Last edited by Lockpro; 05-30-2012, 07:09 PM.

The reason rifle rounds tend to have more dramatic results is because of the higher velocity. But you still aren't knocking anything down.

I'm a firm believer that fragmentation kills!
Google the Strasbourg ballistics test done on Alpine Goats-Believed to have the same body and tissue structure as humans. The experiment was done with Glaser Safety Slugs measuring the incapacitation time shot broadside, through the chest. With all of the popular personal protection calibers, even as low as a .380. It was done very scientifically with the goats hooked up to multiple monitors, measuring the blood loss and drop in BP to establish themselves, "no longer a threat and unable to return fire."
Also, Google "Ballistic Pressure Wave". It will yield info regarding the Strasbourg tests, as well.
The results are sure to change your mind about carrying FMJ's...

Military 9mm NATO ball rounds are what gave the 9mm such a bad rap for so long. FMJ is not a defense round. It goes right through you, doing little (comparatively) damage. Even with a good hollow point defense round, survival rates from handgun cartridges are fairly high. Your carry weapon is your last line of defense to save your life. It's not worth saving a few dollars to skimp.
I use nickel plated cases for daily carry corrosion resistance vs brass and Speer Gold Dot hollowpoint bullets. I'd buy the normal gold dot rounds, but I can reload it to what works best with my carry gun instead.
