Shooting flesh is one thing but through armor is another whole ball park. Try shooting your defense load through debree and see what you end up with. A ball bullet will cut brush, a door, through a moving vehicle, ect. The indians shot rocks and got the job done
How did the whole shooting rocks thing end up for the indians? .
To make a long story short. My stupid neighbor keeps 230gr FMJ in his .45 his stupid brother in law discharged his firearm in the house. The FMJ went thru 4 walls - his pantry door - his cabinet door - 2 glass coffee cups - back of cabinet -1 more layer of sheetrock & stopped in the brick. I told him several times having FMJ loaded for home defense is stupid.
Alright I will admit, up untill a week ago I did just use my target ammo, but decided to buy a box of the zombie ammo just because.........HOWEVER, look at the military, we have been using fmj forever, and I have used it when my life has depended on it several times....and wait for it....guess what, it always got the job done. Would a hollow point have gotten the job done better prolly, but I can't say for certain because all I have for comparison is my fmj's. To me it's a personal preference, if you train to fire under stress and practice enough you could even get the job done with a slingshot. Carry on.
am i the only one that uses regular target rounds for my carry weapons. i mean really, god forbid i ever had to shoot somebody in self defense. do you really think a perp is going to be worried if the bullet inside his body was a hollow point or a ball round. target ammo will get the job done for a fraction of the cost of so called "defense rounds".
How many times do you intend to shoot a person at point blank range????Since "GOD FORBIDI EVER HAD TO SHOOT" you wouldn't be out much money to have the very best ammo you can buy to protect you life and the life of those you were protecting...same with the firearm...it's not something you want to scrimp on...get the best you can and don't look at the cost...if you ever have to use it you will pray that it will do the job and not be concerned about the cost per round...
Why use a broadhead when bow hunting? A field point will do the job with proper shot placement. Is it as effective? Not even close. KInd of the same thought process.
use the best ammo you can afford.
I had my shoulder rebuilt a couple of years ago and had only my left hand to work with.
I shoot 10 or 12 deer (MLDP) with handguns.
.45acp, .357 and .44 mag.
All shot from my ground blinds pretty much point blank.
everyone ran out of sight before it died. Every one
A handgun is a poor man stopper at best.
The difference in those rounds is that the SD ammo is made to expand and stop, not go through the body. The prevents stray bullets from hitting innocent people.
Over the past decade there have been alot of very dead bad guys killed with FMJ"ball" ammo. There's no question it'll kill. The question is how quickly can you incapacitate the intended target. You can mortaly wound someone and they can continue to fight. If a quality hollow point will give me even a slight edge, thats what I'm using. If you spend $500-$1000 on a good carry piece what do you gain by saving a few buck on a box of ammo?

In a military situation, they probably don't care if the bullet go's through. In a civilian situation If i shot the 357 Sig with an fmj it would also shoot who ever was behind him across the street.
The reason to use good quality self defense rounds should be to limit the possibility of the projectile leaving the body of your target and hitting other bystanders. The human body does a very bad job of stopping FMJ projectiles from handguns.
The New York Police carried round nose or FMJ ammo until the late 90’s. The reason they switched was not to have a more terminal round but because someone did a study that showed that a large number of Officers shot in the line of duty were hit by friendly fire after a round had passed through its intended target (bad guy).
