Feeder Funnel Yes or No... and why or why not?

If the surface is flat, corn stays on the sides around the rim edge. It does not empty even if nothing is coming out of feeder. Secondly moisture is inevitable, whether it be humidity, rain, a faulty lid or moisture in the corn.

These two feeders were an easy test....same lids....same barrel....same place.....one with a funnel .....one without. After helping him clean out the mess I offered to buy a funnel for the second one so I did not have to help him again.

Its not flat though. Next time you fill your feeder look at the bottom before and after. it'll bow out enough to allow the corn to slide down. But you are right without a funnel it never completely empties.

For a feeder to get into the shape you described he would have to have way more moisture in the barrell than just from humidity and it would have had to set for multiple months untouched.

I've never had this issue as long as there are no leaks on the lid/barrel. We have several 85 gallon feeders that have been fine for 5 or 6 years running...none have funnels. Those snap ring lids are more trouble than not having a funnel...

Then that brings me back to alowing the feeder to go almost empty before refilling. If you refill the barrell while its still full eough to keep feeding you won't be mixing in any new corn with the old thats in the bottom of the feeder. I have never had an issue with mold in a feeder unless the lid got off or was leaking and I have had corn in the bottom of some of the feeders for well over a year without refilling. Generally it just turn to complete dust from the weevils.

Funnels in mine. I don't want that corn sitting in the bottom of my feeder. I run mine year round so it never really gets empty. Its like inventory....rotate the stock.

Thats the first thing to go on a barrel. I hate them. I use an oversized lid with a large weight on it. Haven't had any issues yet.

Every feeder I've ever owned or had where I hunt has always gotten moisture in it somehow and resulted in moldy corn, which is why I now use funnels in mine as well as 55 gallon drum liners just in case. The drum liners minimize any effort to remove old moldy corn, if it gets moldy, just yank it out like a trash bag, no muss no fuss.

And once again, I'm gonna repeat myself.....it doesn't matter....it's pure physics. The corn and dust still hangs on the edges even when it is empty.

I had issues with this feeder molding with oversized galvanized lids and no funnel. I had this one and two others with galv lids and funnels. The ones with funnels never gave me any problems. That's my personal experience

I don't know what to tell ya man, mine just set there with corn and corn dust for a funnel. When I move one I dump out 10 pounds of corn and dust.
