    Pigs/Hogs

I keep seeing all these threads on “KAP” and it got me wondering – is this REALLY what you want? I mean, if you got your wish and all the feral hogs disappeared, how happy would you really be?

I understand the frustration of farmers who's crops are damaged and I know it's frustrating when hogs take over your feeders and drive deer off when you're hunting. But does this REALLY justify people (especially hunters) wanting to completely eradicate feral hogs in Texas? Hogs provide a year-round and AFFORDABLE hunting option and there are a lot of KAP threads that are started by people that have also posted recipes for making sausage from them or recipes for cooking hog meat. If you really hate hogs and want them all killed, I'd think you would refuse to utilize them.

I wonder if we woke up tomorrow and found ALL the hogs gone, how happy we hunters would actually be? Unless you have a really good income and could afford an exotic hunt, your hunting would be restricted to deer season (if you can find a place and can afford the ever-increasing price) and turkey season. Not much meat on a turkey. I watch the vast majority of GS members who consider themselves lucky to go on ONE 7-day deer hunt per year; and hogs provide everyone with an affordable opportunity to get out and hunt any time you want to. Exotics are expensive to hunt and the cheaper ones, like rams, sure don't generate a whole lot of recipe suggestions , compared to hogs. I think that if the wishes of all the KAP advocates were granted, it wouldn't take long for there to be a giant “WOOOPS!” in the hunting community- especially the bowhunting community!

If hogs are such a problem at your place that you take the “KAP” attitude, why aren't there a ton of threads inviting GS members to come hunt them with you for free? There a sure a lot of GS members that struggle to find/afford a place to hunt that would love to come help you with your problem! It seems to me that some people spend a lot of time complaining about hogs on their property or lease but I can't remember a thread saying “come help me with my hog problem!” I know a lot of farmers around here that complain about them but if someone asks if they can come kill some, they're told “NO.” I just don't get it – especially here on the GS.

Don't get me wrong – I'm all for controlling the hog population when/where it effects agriculture or they're getting into neighborhoods; and I understand high fence operations dedicated to deer wanting to keep hogs out. I'm just pointing out that if the “KAP” philosophy was ever to, truly, come true there would be a consequence that would make a lot of bowhunters pretty unhappy.

I think that “KAP” should stand for “Kill All Predators.” Predators do a lot more damage to deer and other game species than hogs do.

If there were not a single feral hog (in the wild, not in high fences) left in texas i would be happy, as would our native species.

I thought KAP was Kill And Photograph

No I don't want all hogs to be killed.

I agree 100% with what you are saying. If you have a hog problem then do something about it and let someone kill them. By someone I mean me.

Horitexan, you're welcome to your opinion, as is everyone else, but I wholeheartedly agree with the statement quoted here.

Very well said. I agree 100%. I love pigs, glad to have them on our place.

I get to hunt year round if I want.

The government (TP&W) can't tell me what to do with them since they are not a native species.

They eat good (better than deer IMO).

                  They are fun to stalk.

                  They are plentiful.

They populate quickly so there will always be a huntable population.

All those who believe in the KAP doctrine continue to do what you do on your place, but the fact that the state has started to target them as an "unwanted and undesirable" species has me a little worried. The domestic pork lobiest hate that we have all of this free range pork running around. The would like to see the wild pigs erradicated so that we would have to go the the store and over pay for their hormone and chemical injected pork.

Follow the all mighty dollar and you will usually find the source of the problem.

The wild pig has a place in my heart and will always be welcome on my land. I will responsiably harvest what my family needs for food, but I will NEVER buy into the fallicy that all pigs must die. I know many people who have drank the cool aid and will slaughter every pig they see and leave them to rot in the sun. That is just WRONG. My Grandfather taught me early on that if it is good enough to kill it is good enough to eat. If you are not going to eat it don't kill it.

It's a moot point. There is no way, short of some kind of disease that we could eradicate feral hogs. Automatic weapons, grenades, tannerite or any other means will not significantly reduce the population so we are stuck with them. Yes they are fun to hunt and provide year round action. If we killed every single pig on our place it would just be a matter of time until they repopulated the area from other ranches. The good news is, they are very fun to hunt and quite tasty too.

The number of people happy they are gone would greatly outnumber those disappointed they are gone. Hogs are beneficial to nothing. They benefit nothing. The economic loss caused by feral hogs to agriculture in Texas is more than all other pests combined now that the boll weevil is almost eradicated.

But on the other hand....there are a bunch of dollars spent by hunters on nightvision, feeders, spotlights, automatic rifles, helicopter hunts, etc. just for the purpose of hog hunting. I have a lot of friends who never deer hunt but love shooting hogs with nightvision on their ARs. And they would have never started hunting if it wasn't for hogs. Just something to remember.

And don't forget glassy winged sharpshooters and potato psyllids.

Not only that but we are talking about food. The government is using our tax dollars to slaughter our food. If this county spins off into another depression and people are out of work and their babbies are hungry, thoes "evil" pigs shure would make a belly full. But not if you continue to slaughter them.

Another point. Everyone was screaming when they learned the government was making it more difficult to hunt Addix, Oryx, and Dahama Gazzel. They are non-native species. They compete with natives for forage. But they are aforaded some measure of respect where the pig is not.

I guess the pig is the Rodney Dangerfield of the outdoors.

If they were gonna hunt they would have hunted whether there was this huge abundance of feral hogs or not. I can still remember a time when the feral hog numbers were low enough that there weren't alot of people who even knew they existed. It wasn't until 1994 and after that they started to really explode their numbers and they popped up.

And the money spent by hunters on the equipment listed would still be spent whether the hogs existed or not.
