You can never go wrong with Brooks. Especially if you get them from a running store that can watch you walk and see what your steps are like. I step on the outside part of my arch so when I ran I got shin splints a lot. I bought some Brooks that fit the way I run and walk and have support in the area that I needed and haven't had shin splint problem yet. That was 2 years ago and I run almost every day.
Go to runtex (or similar, idk what's in your neck of the woods). Someone that can fit you, watch you walk/run, etc. Hoping to solve your problems here is a crapshoot, imo, as no one can see you.
Or just try on as many as you can and make a day of it walking around academy.
Another advantage to at least some of the specialty running stores is that if they recommend a shoe and you do not like i they will swap it out. I tried two pairs at Run On before landing on the third pair I liked. With each return they asked me what specifically I didn't like and suggested another pair. I actually ended up with a $65 pair of Saucony's that I likes much more than the $100 pair they first sold me. They put the difference back on my credit card. Doesn't get any better than that.
Can't go wrong with going to a store staffed by serious runners.
Fleet Feet is such a store here in Houston.
I'm with salth2o's recommendation of the New Balance 990.
I'm a big heavy guy, clydesdale, and started a lot of my training at 220 and would work down to 205 and 195 once upon a time. If you have big, wide feet, New Balance shoes have a great selection in the EE, EEE and EEEE widths. I've run in the NB 990's for a one of my 3 marathons some years ago.
Get ready to spend in the plus or minus $100 range for shoes.
When you get healed up from the shin splints. Run on trails, i.e. dirt vs asphalt or concrete. It makes a big difference.
Not only can you learn about the technology behind the shoes, you can find a coach near you who has no incentive to sell you anything and can help you analyze your form and become a better runner while limiting, if not eliminating, your injuries.
I had horrible shin splints until I found Newtons. The forefoot technology keeps you striking where you should.

I buy all of my running shoes at Runningwarehouse.com. That is about the cheapest place I have found good running shoes. If they don't fit right, you just send them back and get something else. I would agree that you should go to Luke's or Run On first and get fitted properly.
My running shoe of choice I'd the Asics DS Trainer. I usually buy last years model from Running Warehouse and get them less than 50% of retail. I order two pairs at a time as I go through them pretty quickly.
Good luck.
I've used Asics but didn't like them a whole lot. I've used New Balance and the ones I've had were awesome but now they don't fit my feet right. Right now I have some Saucony's that are pretty good. I haven't run in them but walking with my wife they are pretty comfortable.
